Hi does that mean that if myself and significant other, are capable of working till 70 to then retire on age pension, then, we will immediately have to become housebound with no means of getting food, medical and other necessities from shops 5kms away, we cant walk 10kms as we are short on leg energy haveing used them for operating a vehicle pedals for many years, family live 100kms away so they cant shop for us. Does that then mean the "upper echelons" intend that we "drop off the perch" quickly, thereby saving enormous amounts of dollars in pension, welfare and other payments??'.
Wow what a way to control population without legislation or anyone held responsible!!.

In terms of accidents and deaths, I wonder how the over 70s compare to the under 25s.

Yes Bryan, some people are buggered at 50, and some are competing in swimming and foot racing comps at 80 and 90 years, so there is no rule of thumb. I don't have a problem with driving and written testing for over 70s. I think over here in WA you have to have a medical from 80, and I would be grateful if somebody could spell out the exact rules for WA.

I reckon that the size of caravan being towed should be limited when your over 70. Seen lots of ''old coots'' struggling to back & park them.

I like your avatar Graden, but it would probably be more appropriate for some other posters .
As for the topic, it's just another opinion, similar to the ones saying 4WDs shouldn't be driven unless you live in the country. And we know what opinions are like.
the cop was passing his own opinion based on bias (hes probably going to reach that age group not the not too distant future anyway, so I'm sure he will voluntarily hand in his licence at 70 - yeah right !).
Age does not automatically reflect on a persons driving ability. I have seen many people in their 70s and probably older, who drive their van and tow vehicle like a pro - equally, Ive seen a few who I would keep well clear off. But this also applied to all age groups, not only oldies.
We often see on TV where an elderly person had driven through the front of a shop or partially over the edge of a mutli-story carpark. But we also hear just as many (or more) of younger drunks/drugged who crash into people houses

ALL drivers should have to undergo some form of testing to retain their drivers licence. Once every five years would be a reasonable period.
The test should include a basic medical examination, an eye test, a reaction time component as well as a general knowledge of the road rules section and a short driving test.
Based on a drivers driving history, the testing should have to be undertaken on a more regular basis, say every two years, for those who don't think the road rules apply to them.
Once a driver reaches a certain age, say 75 years, they should have to undergo the test at least every 3 years, as that is when many people start to loose their peripheral vision and become slower to react appropriately.
Just because a person isn't very good at backing their caravan into a tight spot, doesn't mean they're not a capable driver. How many serious crashes have you seen because a driver was reversing his van??
Everyone knows people who are well into their 80's that are totally competent drivers and most also know people in their 20's, 30's and 40's who you would never accept a lift from.

It won't happen the govt couldn't do without the revenue coming from that portion of the driving population. Admittedly there are some out there who should have given in their licences well before 70 due to their lack of spacial awareness and reaction processing abilities . Again Govt seems to base all their off the cuff comments and decisions on city centric living conditions forgetting those who live immediately outside the city CBD who don't have access to public transport. Long before looking at age barriers pollies and their advisors need to look further than their North Sydney homes with door to door public funded transport systems and get out in the real world .

Jeez your a grumpy prick Simmo , bit like this Bryan fellow . You and he should get along fine .
As for the GN drivers , having been a truck driver for way to long I can guarantee there are senior cits that should not be driving . Some are way to fragile , cant look around , nervous and are clearly a danger to themselves and others on the roads . Equally (or even more so) there are plenty of seniors that are exemplary drivers.
Similary I'm sure any professional driver will tell you that there are many young and middle aged drivers that shouldn't be on the roads.
See a pattern here ?
Cheers Al
