After thirty nine years as an active member of the Rural Fire Service I have just withdrawn my services and will not be returning the level of crazy egos and politics that are being played in the Blue Mountains has the potential to impact on the ability of the members to do their job especially those who have a role in engaging with and providing support and information to the community.
i guess this means more time to explore the beautiful country we have the privilege to live in.

Really sorry to hear that. Always had a lot of time for the volunteer fire people. Do the libel laws allow you to tell what the problems are. Just asking. Won't be upset if you don't want to discuss it

Sorry to here that. With out volunteers like yourself we would be in big trouble as fires strike. Im in VIC but if we need help you guys in NSW are the first to come down with support, and like wise our volunteers go up to assist you guys. Volunteers are the main back bone of any emergency service (SES ect). I thank yourself and all others for your service over the yrs.

Like your self aussietraveller, I also quit the Volunteer Fire Service for the same reason, in my case it was people who wanted to run the show, but had no idea or knowledge to do so, these type of people can cause a lot of strife in a situation where the right call must be made in a split second, otherwise lives are at risk.
It's funny, long after I left the brigade, I would still wake in the wee hours, wondering if I had heard that "Damned Pager" going off.
You're right, you will suddenly realise just how much time you had been spending with the Brigade, and now all that lost time can be made up doing just what you want, and when you want,
I say "Good on you" for spending such a long time with the Service,
you've earned your break, now hop out onto the road and just relax and enjoy the peace .
