Have just come up the A1 from Coff's Harbour and how many times I had to slow down for Road Works that weren't there was most annoying . When I come up to Slow Down signs I feel like driving at same speed but that will be just the time I get caught for speeding. Do others get annoyed also. ???

Oh yes - it is so frustrating - I don't know how truckies put up with it. Then you have the ones where there is no sign saying "end of roadworks" - sure enough if you were caught going over the previously signed limit, you would be booked!

I recently came down the M1 from Grafton and until I reached Port Macquarie there was hardly any section of that road where roadworks weren't being carried out, it will be great road in perhaps another 5 years or so, next time I will stick to the New England highway when travelling north.

In many cases roadwork signage requires a slowdown even when there is no apparent work happening there are other factors other than visible workers requiring traffic management to be enforced I.E. road surface prepared or condition, narrowed lanes, damaged/soft edges, water under bitumen.
Contractors do not leave signage out just to annoy drivers for two main reasons - it is expensive and subject to theft and damage when unattended, but mainly there are heavy fines imposed by Police and RMS Inspectors for not covering signage when not required.
I am just P'd off as other drivers (idiots) drive through road work areas disregarding signage spraying rocks as they roar past or force me into the verge as they believe they are too important to drive at posted speeds. There are more important things to worry about rather than taking an extra 5 - 10 minutes to get "there" and when you do just sit back and do nothing anyway.

Drove the length of the Hume last weekend, and a few times I saw a situation in NSW where you come across the following sequence:
Road Work 80 KPH,
The 500m later 80 KPH Ahead
Then 500m later 80 KPH
Then 500m later 40 kph
then 500m later 40 KPH Ahead
then 500m 40Kph.
Was about to start ignoring the first signs, when I spotted a police vehicle with a radar setup. Still frustrating though.

Hi all what part of road safety don't you understand. Slow means SLOW i am involved in traffic management as well as other areas of safety be it road or constuction ect. These signs are not placed to upset you they are out there to guide you SAFELY through or around the area in a safe manner the workmen are also aware that there life is / or may be in jeppardy.There are rules put in place for workers and motorists. They are
1.Worksite Safety-- Traffic Management Code of Practice.
2 The Road Safety Act 2004
3 A S 1742.3
and others These are all in place to give you members of the public and motorists clear instruction and direction about what you need to do.

would love a dollar for every time I have come across roadwork signs that have been left behind when road works is long gone they must be running short of end of roadworks signs because I keep seeing them an there were no others to indicate any works

Over staffing in this area , with a lot of lookers, is the biggest cost of Road Works. I know there needed, but a lot of them are just Bludgers and money thieves.

To dogbox & chucker when driving there are things you don't see thats why the signs are there not really worth a reply. Maybe they havn't experienced road trauma ?????

dishlicker, I agree 100% and have trouble understanding the mad modern motorist that wants to do a 30 minute trip in 29 minutes. On the rare occasions I get down to Perth, I get on the freeway and do the speed limit on my speedo, which is usualy 2 to 4 Kms over my GPS, therefore I am doing a fraction under the limit. I constantly have those city idiots right up my back side, I don't touch the brakes these days , I just ease off a fraction and try to see the look on their faces in my mirror. If you are taking a Heart Attack victim to hospital go for it. If not why do you have to get somewhere 2 minutes early?
I expect a bit of flack because I am referring to the majority. I have had 1 speeding ticket in the last 35 years and that was because we had been on the road for 5 hours and I was trying to get my wife to a service station toilet to save the seat covers.

You can pontificate as much as you want but it does not excuse the idiots in traffic management companies that can't put the signs out properly OR take them down over night when that are not needed.
Example 1:
A 25 km/h sign set up under a 60km/h sigh. The 60km/h sigh was not blanked out. When raised with the intelligent traffic management boss on site, response, I didn't notice it..
Example 2:
A 25km/h sign on a side road, just before an intersection to a main road. All sped restrictions signs on the main road had been removed. That 25km/h sign made it unlawful for any one coming off that side road to go faster than 25km/h till they cane across a higher speed sign, some 5 km further down the main road.
Example 3:
On a major highway, fine speed restrictions leading into and out of the work zone. BUT at the exit on one side of the highway instead of a 110km/h sign it was 100km/h. Why, they did not have enough of the correct signs. This thus made it illegal to travel at 110km/h for another 20km, till the correct speed sign, 110km.h was sited.
These are just 3 examples of pure incompetence by so called traffic management people. I also suspect they are in breach or the required regulations re traffic management.
Also don't tell me about things I dont see on the road, because of these examples were pure incompetence.
I have other examples of similar incompetence as well, so these are just a few I have noticed on the roads.

I have no problem with slowing down for roadworks, what I have a problem with is the placement and sequence of the signs. Just in case you did not notice the first actual speed limit sign (80kph) was long before the speed limit ahead sign, which in turn preceded a further speed limit sign, this happened twice on each occasion, and three occasions on the trip up and down the Hume. The professional drivers who drive the road regularly are clearly used to it, not slowing until the second actual speed limit sign, even saw one B Double do the big swerve round a car that had slowed for the first (clearly out of place sign) speed limit sign.
Given that it happened on three occasions, it was not an accident or a mistake, it is clearly a traffic management company that have decided it makes sense to cause traffic confusion, and create unsafe circumstances.

The sign that says prepare to stop and there are no stop or go persons or traffic lights.
And further to that on three occasions now I have stopped at worksite traffic lights which have gone green so have started off only to find that the traffic coming in the opposite direction has also got a green.
On one of these occasions the road was only single file and no way for one to pass the oncoming traffic. Resulting the woksite manager had to organise a grader to make a place where we could pass . Boy was it some fun as we were 2 with vans going one way and a B double going the other plus backing up for all was not on due to the temporary road conditions.
Needless to say after clearing the site we stopped had a cuppa and a laugh with the road crew. Made our day really.

Yes it was raised. response, oversight. But that oversight still lasted for 2 days.
These are traffic management companies. They are required to know the regulations, not pretend.
