After some brainstorming at the Foreign Affairs department, Australian and NZ citizens now face the prospect of having our biometric data stored in an Internet "cloud". In a world where enemy governments and organised cybercriminals are targeting our personal data, we are being assured that our data will be secure. ISTR that the USA's social security database was hacked not long ago.
This country can't even get its act together in respect of easily achievable goals such as electronic voting, and now we are jumping in the deep end. Do these people have any clue?

It's not always the pollies coming up with wonderful ideas, it's the people behind them, just think back to the TV show "Yes Minister"

I don't know what all the hysteria is about. They will be using VPN to connect between the government bodies. If someone is going to crack the Immigration database they already have an easier way to steal our identities now. It currently exists with their current access to the net. The VPNs that will be used in the future for data transfer between government departments is far more secure.
