If this is a dumb question, or in the wrong section I apologise.
I was thinking about using my Laptop on the car battery. But on looking at the transformer for using 240 Volt, I notice it has an output of 19 Volts. It is an ASUS 18 1/2 inch Laptop.
Question, is there an easy way around this hassel, as built in battery is only good for 1 or 2 hours and our minimum drive is usually at least 5 hours plus, and Mother likes her Puter Games.
I do have a 240 Projecta brand inverter, which puts out 120 watts and has a Cigarette lighter plug and cord.
I wait with electric / baited breath, for a positive response.

I have a 12v laptop power supply which works a treat - got it from Jaycar which I just discovered has it on special, $15 cheaper than I paid for mine

Thanks friends, being in Carnarvon I am nearly 1,000 Ks away from any Jaycar shops but, will check out the local shops now that I know there are devices to do the job. We at least have Repco, Auto one, Best Buy and a Computer shop so there is a chance.

12V cigarette lighter socket power supply, works well. We bought ours from Dick Smith. It has 12 different sized plugs on the computer end for different makes & models. Easy!

Just plug the computer power pack into the inverter. We have a similar setup and have used it for several years.

I have a mac and found it far better to use a 12v power supply, then using the inverter. For some technical reasons inverters don't like the laptop power supplies.
I needed to buy a 12v charger with a variety of setting - needed 19v for my computer also. Works so much better than the straight 12v charger I started with. I also plug it in to 12v as soon as I turn it on - never let the battery get low as it takes so much more to recharge and the 12v can get hot.

i have the same computer as you do and i got my charger set up from JAYCAR....comes with a multitude of plugs and an instruction book that tells what plug is for what appliance. If you cant find it in any other store maybe go online and see if you can order one that way through JAYCAR

There are a couple of different Projecta brand inverters I know one only has a about 2 amp out put. It will not charge the battery of some laptops.
There's another Projector that has about 5 amp output both come with multiple plugs and are good quality products. The larger output one is somewhat more expensive but a better choice.

Not only do you need to ensure that the output from the 12V power supply is the right voltage, it also needs to be at least the same or higher wattage. In some cases you also need to check polarity (some have a negative pin).
Spida these PC batteries need to be discharged. If you keep it fully or nearly full charged it will get lazy. Although the battery manufacturer might claim that they don't develop a memory, they do. My advice is to run it till it beeps. The newer batteries are better, but hat only reduces the problem, it doesn't eliminate it.

You are half way between two stockists. Which way are you heading?
In the meantime you could try your inverter (you have nothing to loose but your smokers cough.) They are nowhere as efficient as a dedicated 12 V PSU for your computer but it will get you out of trouble for a while.

PeterD, not heading anywhere at the moment, just doing a bit of planning ahead. Also smoked for 45 years and stopped at 8.30am 13th June 2000. In coming January I will be 33 years past what my Father lived, and now I don't care if I have 10 mins or 10 years left, it has been a good ride.

I have the same computer and blew all the fuses when I plugged it into the inverter I used to use for my Dell laptop (silly me didn't check first of course). Bought a 12v charger off eBay for $8.13 including postage and works great. I searched specifically for a charger for an Asus; no problem.
