Like many people, I have a mobile phone, but with one difference, I only carry this Mobile because the wife is a type 1 diabetic, and is in such a way that if she goes down, she will require an ambulance straight away, as has happened in the past.
This mobile account was costing me $20.00 per month , but I hadn't used the phone at all for over 6 months.
A couple of weeks ago I received a letter from Telstra, saying they were going to increase the phone bill to $30.00 per month, no reason was given for this increase. ???
I spent an Hour on the phone to them the next day asking why the increase, they could not justify it at all, all they suggested was that seeing as I was an ex-employee , I could apply for a 10% discount, hang on I said, 10% of $30.00 = $3.00 means I will be still paying an extra $7.00 more for the phone than what I am paying now !!!
Well I hung up thinking "stuff you lot" the following day I rang them again and asked, how much would it cost if I bought a pre-payed allowance, "surprise, surprise" $70 for twelve Months, on hearing this I asked them to cancel my mobile account straight away.
I am now saving a heap of $$$$$ and still have phone service when and if I require it. because of their greed the "Mighty Telstra" now loose $ 170.00 per year
I have one saying for them..... "DON"T MESS WITH A KIWI"

I steadfastly refused to have a mobile phone (ex-Boss called me a "troglodyte" - think it means a cave-dweller). However I bought a pre-paid Telstra Cruise from Woollies a week ago to take with me on my trip to Tassie, in case car broke down or I needed to converse with real estate agents over there. Seems to do the job of a basic phone that stores contact numbers. That's all I need. Cost $29 and had $10 worth of free calls for first month. Pretty good value I reckon. ... Val

KJ I also got one of those letters . I found it fully explained the difference , We were paying $20 a month and paying for calls , The new plan is $30 a month all calls ,SMS and mms unlimited free , $10 a month extra we think it's a bargain . If you only need it emergency maybe a pre paid may do the job , But we will use it instead of the home phone , Hope you find one that suit your needs

On the whole Telstra are the only mobile phone company that provides anything approaching a full phone coverage all over Aust.
We constantly have city people visit the Copper Coast area wondering why they cant get a signal, when the conversation comes up we are told they get a great price from their provider, just that they cant pick up a signal outside the city limits.
Been with Telstra for over 45 years, very happy with the service and certainly see no reason to change.

I agree with you there Santa, Telstra are the only provider for travellers. What's the point of having all the cheap stuff, if it won't work anywhere except in the city.
Always been with Telstra, never had a problem they couldn't fix.

Wife and I each have a new Optus Samsung phone plan. Costs us $49 and the wife does a lot of yapping to the kids here and overseas. Coverage is pretty good unless you are really out in the sticks.
But we also have a Telstra "Dave" phone with a mounting base and external aerial. We have this for emergencies only in areas that Optus don't have cover.
We pay $10 which is good for 3 months before it expires. Think we have used it (nor non-emergency reasons) about twice. We try to remember to use up the credit, but usually forget

One thing I've found, and this probably applies to a lot of companies, If you want helpful info, Don't ring their after hours, answering service.
1st I found it very hard to understand the language they use, I've asked for an Australian Operator before but, have be left on hold and no answer !!
2nd the after hour Operators are great at handing you call on to someone else, who will put you on hold, then after a long period of time decide to transfer your call to a third, or maybe it's your 5th transfer, I reckon they are told to do this just so you will get fed up in the end and hang up.
The service I now have, which costs $70.00 per year gives me plenty of talk time, more that ample for any emergency, and as I carry it at all times but never have it on, it's a good cheap insurance of help if required.

Yes, that would have been a good idea to go to a Telstra shop ( if one can find one ) dishlicker,
but I can't understand why they will place people in the info position, when they don't have a clue where to start.
I'm glad to say, everything is now sorted and after talking to an Aussie Bloke on my second call, who understood exactly what I wanted and came up with the answer within minutes, he was thinking about helping me, not making more money for Telstra .
