OK back in the 1980s-90s while living in Kalgoorlie, one of our favourite pastimes was catching Yabbies in many dams around Kalgoorlie. They make a fabulous Sunday Arvo meal, and no dinner cooking on Sun night. I haven't heard of people going Yabbying for Donkey's ages.
If anybody knows of any Yabbie dams with in 50 Km of Carnarvon WA, please give me some info as I would love a feed.
Yes I could go out and test the local waters, but dams that stay continuously wet are fairly rare around here, so some pin point correct info would be handy.

You will have to decide whether your post is anything to do with motorhoming or is just of a general interest not connected with motorhoming
A good start would be to have a subject line that has relevance to the topic you are discussing. In this instance I would suggest a subject line such as
Do you go yabbying or
Does anyone stillgo yabbying these days or
Are there any places near Carnavon WA where I can go yabbying
With a subject line like the ones I have suggested it would make it so much easier for any members who are interested in that subject ( yabbying ) to read and write about it.
It would also mean that in future members could easier find the topic on yabbying.
This would be so much nicer for all .

Boy I am getting sick of people too lazy to look at a few posts to find what they like. If you want a Yabbying page maybe you also want a Snapper page, a Herring page, a Bream page, a shark page, then one on fleas and fruit fly.

Hi Simmo ! They were called Gilgies (Jillgies?) when I was a kid, not Yabbies, I think that term came from the Eastern States.
Do you remember the creek down near Odin Road ? We used to get a few from there when we were kids. Once a few of us lads were having a skinny dip and a few of the local girls came along, none of us were game to get out of the water, so they stole our clothes, took them some distance away and dumped them laughing their heads off. I think one of the girls was called Gloria Osborne. Ooops.......I'm off topic, sorry all

Personally, I don't give a rats rectum where people post - I read EVERY sub-forum and open ALL new posts. After opening it I decide whether I will take any notice of it again - or subscribe to it so I get an email advice when some one comments.
Now - regarding what you put in the Subject line ... there is a Search function on the forum. I must admit it is not the best search engine I have encountered, but it IS a search engine.
Should someone want to search at some time in the future for "that post Young Simmo put up about yabbies" then it would help if your subject had been something like "Finding yabbies" .. or such like.
No-one would ever think to search for "I hope this is in the right forum" for a post on yabbies.
Just a thought mate. Hang in there and perhaps let some of the quickly proffered 'advice' roll over ya and not get up ya hooter

Hi rockylizard, the trolls don't worry me as I get a bit of fun from giving back more than I got. I do try to keep my posts a bit interesting and informative, but a lot of people don't have a clue what to say, so they bag some body who is making them look like 90 year olds, with 9 year old brains.

Yes Vic (Weevil), I think the Osborne girls father was, Sam Osborne who was the Foreman at Vickers Hoskins where I did my apprenticeship. Also I think you will find that Jilgies are small Marron, and Yabbies are a different species.

Re catching yabbies - western and southwestern Qld we catch them in creeks that usually are dry for 6 months of the year so Carnarvon should be no different. You can also dig them out of the mud or from under logs when dry.
I think you blokes get marrons? I caught a few when stay at the Hutt River province last year which tasted like prawns.....beautiful.
Out Adavale way they can taste like mud but sprinkle some saltpetre in and that sweetens them up. Some people use sunlight soap to catch them but we prefer fresh shot roo in the trap.
Just bought a book on Yabbies - "Salute to the humble Yabby"...a pretty good read.

Yes, Gilgies are a WA Species and Yabbies a species from over east introduced into WA dams about 1932. I had never heard of Yabbies until I went over east. See this link;

hi Young Simmo most farm dams have a yabby populations these days. Spoke with a bloke out Dumbleyung who travels to most farms and gathers the Yabbys to fatten them up and sells them o/seas
