If you would like to find it yourself just click on the search button above and select advanced search
then enter the word cooktown and search in the section free/budget campsites and select QLD and it will all be revealed to you.

Depends on how close you mean. There is a free camp right in Cooktown for the self contained. Ranger arrives pretty quick smart after you park to ensure you are self contained, otherwise, move on.

the ranger will actually get under your van to ensure you have a grey water tank, he goes past you at least 5 times day and night to make sure you comply. ......you really feel welcome

That is interesting to know.
Can someone tell me, where do you leave vehicles or vans that you can't use to get to the top where only 4x4 will do. Is there somewhere to store them, as I understand Cooktown is the most northerly for 2 wheel drive.

Actually, we did, last time there. Not the nicest experience at the Visitor's centre then a really nice and friendly exchange with the Ranger. Seems council is getting some grief from the usual suspects and are making an effort to ensure the free camp facility succeeds. Ranger has great PR skills and told us of lots of good places to visit and enjoy. Only whinges I have heard, so far, were from those who don't comply and expect special treatment.

The CP at Mt.Carbine will look after your rig if you stay 1 night there before you go and also when you come back to pick it up.
