Wow, I am sick to death of answering the phone to here, "Is that Tom Brown" or "Is that Mary Smith" or "who am I talking to"? As far as I am concerned they are arrogant, ignorant, mental retards. If I ring somebody I say, "It is John here", and carry on. More often than not the calls are from groups wanting money. I would rather put my spare dough into a lotto ticket. I have a new plan now to say, "Who the F**** wants to know", and see if I can get a good bubble going over the phone. Anybody else out there got some thoughts on this bad manners thing?

You may just live to regret this idea Simmo, especially when someone in India etc places you in their computer auto dial up at 1AM,,,, 2AM and 3AM EVERY night. It just rings and when you answer there is no one there, just the computer waiting to call you AGAIN IN 59 MINUTES.
Yes it is annoying but it sometimes doesn't pay to "stick your chin out".

Yeah you could be right there Baz421, However about 3 years ago I bought an extremely high pitched whistle from a sports shop. I have given a long hard blast with that dozens of times to the Indian and Philippino Scammers, hoping if they haven't got ear plugs in, they at least have head phones on. I haven't so far had any repercussions so will drop the words and use the whistle.

The whistle only works for a person. IF they link you into a computer auto dial you are stuffed because there is not a person on the other end. You end up changing phone numbers.

The simplest discouragement is when you answer the phone, and they ask, "Is that Young Simmo?" ... say "Yes", and then say "Would you hold on for a moment please, I was in the middle of something."
Then just leave the phone sitting on the bench/table and leave it there with them hanging on.
Eventually they will hang up as they are carefully monitored for "holding time" (how long they stay on the phone - as they are expected to make X number of calls each hour).
Just check the phone after about 15 mins and they will be gone ... after a few times and your number will be removed from their calling pattern.

Phone rings, I answer, "is Mary/Joan available please (I don't remember the exact name). Mary/Joan does not live here and I do not know her.
Me:"Sorry, she's busy giving me a head job. Can I take a message".
They hung up.

Couldn't help myself one day when a scammer rang. He made the mistake of asking how I was, told him I'd been released from hospital the day before for heart problems, wasn't feeling well, did he think I should call an ambulance. The unsympathetic so and so had the hide to hang up on me.

Hi there young simmo i had the same problem but i would answer the phone very nicly and then carry on a conversation that has absolutly no meaning to them at all the longest to stay on line and wait for me to finish was 35 seconds. Then i rang the odmans for communication and had my nmber placed on the no call rego im bored now between 6/7 at night cheers

We also seem to be on some sort of cyclic list we go for several months with no annoying calls and then get several weeks worth, we are on the no call list but that does not stop overseas callers, there is usually a pause when you answer with no one on the line at the other end so I just hang up, other than that any call I get that I don't want I just start talking about any crazy thing that comes to mind and invariably they hang up rather quickly and I have a bit if a giggle it helps to be a bit nuts

Had another one this morning asking for my wife by name, I said "she has just pulled into the drive way, I'll get her for you", put the phone on the table and walked away.
Also had one yesterday and I asked who's calling? It was the Australian Conservation Foundation and an Aussie voice. I just screamed a heap of foul profanities for about 15 seconds then hung up, that made me feel better.
I must go back into the, "Do Not Call", register and renew my info.

the problem with the "do not call" facility is that it only applies to companies based on Australian turf. If the call centre is from an overseas company or IINET, Optus, some of our major Banks and many others who want cheap overseas labour, the "do not call" does not apply and they can still telemarket you without breaching any law. It also applies to registered political parties and some charities...

That does not work particularly well. There are clipping and compression circuits in the first amplifier that limit the voltage (and thus the power of the whistle) that is transmitted through the system.

last year there was a TV clip about telemarketers in the USA. Apparently they are really bad there.
One very well known light night show host over there used to talk about what sort of sex would they like with him or comment on their various body parts. The telemarketers would hang up very quickly and that company "black listed" him for future calls. In the TV clip here, they showed the bit where he said this. And he was very explicit !! (oh - for those of us old enough, we were taught never to start a sentence with "And". It is usual now and Im told totally acceptable in our modern language)

I totally know what your going through.
I work for myself. I am the Receptionist, as well as the business manager, the Owner of the business, Just a employee, Is that Jim,No I'm Peter his brother you will need to talk to him. The boss is away on Business. He will be back at 5pm. Its his golf day call tomorrow.
I have caller ID on my phone so 80% of the time I can see who is ringing in, and can vet before I pick up.
If I get caught out, I tell the caller if they would like to hold as the boss is on another call. I place the phone down and keep working.
Some days I just feel like saying naughty things to piss them off.
