"conversation" with - rather than discuss or talk with
"engage" - rather than meet or discuss or talk with and to
Then our State govts picked up on these weasel words and now we have reporters and TV commentators using these words.
Why not say what they mean?? Do these words make them look smarter, more intelligent or more sincere??
Wen I hear it, I think what a d/head the user is - superficial, stupid and a follower of others using the same words......

What about "Oh My God" and "That's A Good Question", or a bit of "Absolutely" all the time waving your hands about with double karate jobs and then the orchestra conducting and a bit of double pointing to finish it off.

How about NAVSATCOMFAC Naval Satellite Communications Facility sounds a bit like nincompoop to me.

These days life is all about the ''JOURNEY''.
When a sporting team looks like being beaten by another, the team that's losing always looks to one of their fellow team mates to ''PUT THEIR HAND UP'' to prevent them from losing. Put their hand up what?
People don't go to Church like they used to years ago, ''OH MY GOD''! It's actually blasphemy.

A word people use that irks me is "Kids", for those who have used the word since year dot it probably sounds OK, but I was taught that we have children and that kids are baby goats. Another is "Pitcher" that's a nice pitcher. A pitcher is a water jug or someone in a baseball game. Picture sounds better, most TV and radio announcers are guilty of this.
And while I have been contributing to forums, the term "Thankyou in advance" gets up my nose. Its like the writer cannot be bothered doing their own research and wants us the members to do the leg work, and when all is entered the original writer doesn't have to show any appreciation.

and the other annoying TV reporter/announcer thing that has developed is shortening their names. For example on Ch 7 at 6.30pm the presenters name is Monica. Now all the reporters and other announcers call her Mon. Ch 7 seems to be the worst at it - almost as bad as referring to things/places by their abbreviation like the mouthful name Santa gave above. I guess they all drink 4X or VB as any other beer has a name that is too long for them to be bothered saying and bar staff probably wouldn't understand their abbreviated name for it !!!

Another bloody Americanism.
In Australia we have bushfires, grassfires and campfires.

Up my nose is when you see a white person claiming to be an indigenous person using the terms " I'm doing it for my people or doing for country", Yeah so long as there's something in it for me more likely
Another is the Head nodder that always stands behind a pollie when they are talking at a news briefing about a subject they know bugger all about and are in need of moral and backbone support , which is all the time.
Jurno's who don't listen to the previous question and answer and ask the same thing over and over. The ABC are real masters at it
Ever noticed that when at a news briefing the Jurno never has a mic so we can all hear the question and gauge if the question is appropriate or more importantly if the answer is appropriate , pollies have a habit of talking around the question and tell you nothing .
Another : Your Not Seeing the big picture

Worse than that, or probably more accurately, pollies who don't answer the Journo's question, but give an answer to a question they'd rather answer.

wombat - I agree. They have these set piece interviews and it might even be important like senior police or fire staff bringing us up to date on a major incident, and you have no idea what the question is and it appears there are no microphones with the reporters. Then the spokesperson answers and you have absolutely no idea what theyre talking about.
However, I notice the nodding dogs that stand behind pollies aren't as numerous anymore - especially at Federal level - seems more like it still happens with the State pollies lap dogs

I think the reason for the lack of mic's at news briefings could be put down to the fact that most Jurno's recorded on mobile phones, hence, there are no camera or audio drivers on site doing what they normally do in a real doc'o . The lack of mics to record both question and answer not only happens at door stop interviews and outdoor broadcasts but also in designed news briefing rooms . Sometimes through frustration I just switch stations , answer without hearing the question really has no relevance to keeping the viewer fully informed. Most pollies can be , and usually are, talking crap about something they no nothing about but will never let the photo op slip by regardless of the facts . Jurno's are masters as asking pollies and public officials questions which are that far from their portfolio or task they may as well talk to a Martians for all the good any answer has to informing anyone on the topic . Jurno's are like academics their career depends on the publish or perish mantra so they rush to press regardless of the content of the story all in the hope of getting to air or print before it becomes tomorrows chip wrapper or a foot note in Hansard .
I have always been a public broadcaster supporter but I've gone off the ABC of late as they seem to have an axe to grind with federal government all based on having their enormous budget reviewed and been held to account for programming

verbalise
"at this point in time" instead of "now" or "at the moment"
"can you talk us through it?"
yeah, no
After the NZ versus SA rugby semifinal, the NZ captain was asked "can you vocalise that?"
First it was our Federal polllies:
"conversation" with - rather than discuss or talk with
"engage" - rather than meet or discuss or talk with and to
