The tablelands are a favourite place of mine along with Innisfail down the hill.

My wife's a bat fan. So, this means a trip to the Tolga Bat Hospital just outside of Atherton next year.
So far, all we've looked at is where to stay there. The Big 4 Caravan Park at Atherton looks nice. Haven't looked anywhere else, yet, but if free camping is being restricted to self-contained vehicles, then whatever van we get we may need to ensure that it has a substantial grey water tank or to get one fitted.

Walkamin Central caravan park not far from Tolga is a great place to stay ,Lot cheaper than Big 4 , It is about 12 mins south of Mareeba on the main road to Atherton .

Walkamin van park as well as the park at Tolga reportedly good- no where near the cost of a Big 4. We find not a problem collecting grey water in a 20lt drum & into the dump point in Atherton as we drove around sight seeing. As for bats!!!
Thanks for comments.

Thanks brickies. Will check it out.
Been doing a street view of Atherton. Place doesn't look all that appealing. Doesn't look like an economically thriving community.

Martin Walkamin Central is a great location lots of room with a central large shed where everyone meets , When we were there last $25 a night it nearly half way from Atherton and Mareeba but closer to Mareeba and just a short drive to Tolga we found it very central and did drive down to cairns for the day and Herbterton the other way and very well run park the owner Lucy join in for happy hour

Thanks Brickies.
As coincidence would have it, there's an article in one of the caravan mags that I bought last week which focuses on what the Atherton Tablelands has to offer. It showed an aerial view of the Walkamin caravan park. Looks like plenty of room.
