Running windows 8.1 on a new ASUS LT with SSD (sweet)
Internet just refuses to work, called DR PC and was told my anti virus (Trend) was causing the issue. LT now works as I have uninstalled the bad boy.
OK, all crap aside, what is the best internet protection I can get. Im leaning to Kaspersky as this was gold on the old LT. Nortons Im told will slow everything down. Now I know there will be "favorites" so lets hear your reasons for favoring them.
Interesting the bloke from DrPC told me win 8.1 has its own antivirus and offers minimal yet decent protection????

Hi Phil, I hear your pain.
At work I am a rusted on Kasperski fan, as an app it is a pain to manage, but it has kept the 300 plus PCs in our fleet safe for over 4 years.
At home I run AVG Free (I am a Scott), but it is starting to annoy me with the tricks they keep trying to get you to upgrade to the paid version.
I am hearing very good things about AVAST, I know afew very fussy techies who swear by it. I believe it will be my choice next time around.
My advice is of course based on my experience with Win 7. My techies run win 10 on a couple of PCs, and I have not heard about any AV problems.

To me Nortons slowed an old desktop so much I uninstalled and then had to get the fragments uninstalled by special program as it leaves fragments.
AVG on my last laptop was good until a virus came in via AVG free and stopped all downloads and security updates. Took me about 8 hours to fix via safe mode and beating the virus from blocking the download to kill it.
Others know what does work best. I am trying AVAST on phone, so far all good.
Sounds like Plendo has the answer for you though based on practical experience, which you know I like/prefer Phil,,,,,,lol

Phil, if you have Windows 8.1 then just use Windows Defender which comes included. I spend a Lot of time on the net and that's all I use and never had an issue.

On my windows 7 system Mtcrosft security essentials and my Linux Mint System i do not use anti virus.

I use Zone Alarm free firewall and AVG free Anti-virus.
Its as good as it gets.

I'm with you Steve, have been running Windows Defender on 8.1 and now 10 for over 18 months without a problem.
Over the years I've run Norton, Trend and AVG, all are overly intrusive.

The top protection suite would have to be the Kaspersky suite.
For the cheapskates like some of those who have already responded and also me, Avast is the best free anti virus programme and ZoneAlarm the best free firewall. Some will tell you that free software is not as good as paid for commercial software. These programmes are not totally free software, they are both parts of complete suites like Kaspersky and those suites are nearly as good as Kaspersky. These individual parts of the suites are only free to home users and not for commercial users.

Me too, haven't used a third-party anti-virus program since XP. Only used MSE in Win 7 and now Defender in Win 8.0/8.1. I also run as a limited user without admin privileges, so any major changes to the system requires the admin password. Heard about a survey a while back that found more than 90 per cent of successful malware attacks were on computers where the user had full admin privileges.

There are several reviews available on the effectiveness of anti-virus suites available on the web. Of the ones that list only the top 10 suites Windows Defender does not feature. In the comprehensive reviews you will find the M$ offering well down the list. That's why so many of us recommend some of the better free products. I suppose that Windows Defender is OK if you don't have the skills to use something better.

Peter, me being a computer engineer for 30+ years and a software developer for over 20, I don't need to rely on reviews to evaluate software products, because I can actually do that for myself. But if you feel that you need that much hand holding to keep you safe on the internet then maybe you should stick to newspapers and junk mail.... just keep plenty of band-aids handy for all the paper cuts you're likely to get
