Did I say major? Well there is, 80% of the Pacific Highway from just north of Byron Bay to as far as Port Macquarie. I haven't ventured further south yet. Major is a good word to cover it and I tell you that for free. It will be truly amazing when all finished though.
No big deal as traffic flow is good but does get down to 40kmh in a few spots. Just allow a little extra time due to the slower speeds if you are on a deadline.

those road works have been ongoing for some time and will continue to be going on for some time to come I think ..... we tend to head west to the New England when we exit the postcode here on the Northern Rivers and then head wherever from Tenterfield or Glen Innes

We are in the middle of all this, it will be great when it all opens & the bypass at home has been a relief from trucks racing down the main street. Can't wait.

Pacific hwy upgrade roadworks enter 53rd year. That is how long the various (yes ALL of them) NSW governments have taken to upgrade our number 1 major coastal highway.
Doug and Jim I reckon it will take the lazy mongrels another 50 years to finish it.
end of rant sorry Doug, I think I am still ON topic mate

We're in the middle of it as well at Iluka right on the riverfront Caravan Park (40). Took us nearly 4 hours to go from Grassy Head to Iluka with the biggest delay being Grafton where all the signs telling you what turn to take have not been altered to take into account the roadwork diversions.
But who's complaining - the destination always makes up for the hassle.

yep, know what you mean Frank.
In saying that the bypass at home got done very quickly, that complete bridge being the longest in the southern hem only took a few months to assemble from precast sections but many yrs in the planning.
There has been a huge amount of work done on that section in a short space of time up to us leaving in March so will be interesting to see how much more by time we get back home. Good weather makes a huge difference.

And they STILL haven't even started planning any Coffs Harbour bypass. .
This is the one town on the coast that needs bypassing more than any other. The other ones were Ballina and Kempsey which was completed recently.

Yep agree, it is a long slow hall through Coffs. It will happen one day though, maybe not while you or I want to tow through there but one day.

Long history about that one. It was to be one of the first towns bypassed. They even had all the land resumed to do the diversion. Then the great Premier from the north coast, Kermit the Frog (Nick Greiner,) sold off the land cheaply to his mates. Now the resumptions have to start over again, when and if the locals can agree on the route.
I reckon it will be the last bit of the upgrade to be done.

off topic - but talking about major road works.....
Ive been accused of bagging Canberra recently, but got to say the State Govt is right on it with a new motorway or freeway theyre putting in Fyshwick out by the airport.
The contractors have got traffic diverted off the existing (but new parts of it) motorway without major problems or delays and they have 100s of guys and heaps of machinery pushing it along. Looked very impressive when we went this way out to the Outlet stores the others day - and theyre great as well. Bought a pair of work shoes at normal price for $150 and got another pair of the same shoes for free. Also picked up a pair of Levi jeans for $40. Last pair cost me $130 from a Levis store in Melbourne

Over on the far right hand side of the webpage there is a downloadable PDF map which shows the state of the whole Pacific Highway from Hexham to the Qld border. It shows the construction commencement and completion dates for all stages - the last date shows the whole highway will be complete by 2020.
The last stages not yet started are from just west of Ballina down to Halfway Creek south of Grafton - everywhere else is either completed or currently under construction.

It's heading that way. I think Coffs Harbour will become a much nicer place when it eventually happens

Do they plan to get rid of that narrow bridge at Grafton?
