Hooked the van up to power this weekend to make sure all was good. Checked the next day and the fridge, set at low, was running at -4c. The bench over the fridge was warm to touch.
The fridge is a 3 way, probably 23 years old.
Any ideas?

The only thing that I can think of is that the thermostat is sticky from lack of use , may have to manually operate it a couple of times to free it up.

Is this van new to you and this is your first trial of the fridge. If not, was the thermostat at the same setting as you had it in previous times? What was the temperature then?
Regarding the "bench over the fridge was warm to touch," this is normal operation. To assist in improving the operation of the fridge you cold install insulation over the top of the fridge. This will prevent heat travelling over the top of the fridge and getting back into the cabinet of the fridge.

I reckon if you get -4 overnight in an old 3 way absorption fridge you are doing pretty good - many fail to get this cold.....ever.
You do not say if the -4 was measured in the freezer section or on one of the shelves.

Thanks for all replies.
Previously the fridge has worked fine, had the van for about 10 years. The last trip away we had a couple of times when the contents on the main shelves froze.
It's now running at around -4, measured on the middle shelf.

Thinking maybe the thermostat needs replacing?
We find ours will also freeze some items at the back of the fridge especially if the door hasn't been opened often...leave ours set at 3 and really haven't found 1 or 5 to make it any different probably because they are so slow to cool down unlike a compressor fridge that cools down rapidly.
I found a thermostat on Ebay too for $99:

Good Luck
