Hi I am new to this forum and am looking for advice on putting a toilet into an old furniture removal van that I'm turning into an RV. I don't know weather to put a cassette system in or a tank underneath, which i have room for. Can anyone please assist.

Welcome Hound dog I'm sure you will get for and against both systems we have a tank but we bought second hand and it's our first van so have no experience with the cassette system

Hi,
If you put in a cassette system, you'll be emptying it every few days, but I think that the underfloor one would last much longer before you need to empty it. ð

Hi there Hound Dog,welcome to the forum .We have a cassette system which lasts us between 4 to 5 days and if we wanted to go longer we would get a spare cassette
but we find water is the big issue . Our water only lasts about 4 days ,so when we fill up with water it's almost time to empty the cassette.

If you put a tank in make sure it has good capacity. Go for at least 150 litres for the black and 300 litres for the grey water.

Thank you your your reply. How big is the holding tank that last you 4 days. Im looking for something to last 10 to 12 days so I think it will have to be a tank but not sure of the size.

Thank you for the reply PeterD. Im looking to be sufficient for 10 to 12 days going bush. I cant believe space is a problem for me but it is. I have already ordered a 300 ltr water tank 120 ltr grey. I will go for a black tank how big do you think I need and what sort of toilet. Its starting to do my head in, Im leaning toward a boat macerating one. I cant seem to get any good information from caravan suppliers. Any good information from people greatly appreciated.

We have a 19 ltr cassette which goes into a Dometic 4110. Yes mate i'v have got heaps and heaps of good blues music.
Just love the blues.(music that is)

IF you get a boat macerating one MAKE SURE YOU GET THE BEST QUALITY. I spent hours with my head 6" from dunnies in cousins 3 heads on his yacht. They were a nightmare. They need to be VERY powerful to do the job properly.
We empty our 14 litre black tank roughly every 3 days for 2 people, BUT that is late afternoon when cold and night use only generally, so extrapolating for 10-12 days for us would be say 45-60 litres. Therefore I would allow say 80 litres and there are 80 litre tanks available.

I had a macerating pump on my Ocean 37 cruiser which I had for 6 years, pumped into a black water tank, and never had a problem.
I took advice when buying the boat and the one thing which never happened was to allow anything other than human waste to go into the toilet.
We always had a small closable bin in the toilet area and everything else went into that, including used toilet paper, paper hankies, etc.
The advice proved to be correct and I pass it on for what you think it is worth.

Depends if your more into hands on so to speak ? I guess if your the type to change a babies nappy ? Your fine with cassette ..
We have two motorhome ( don't ask) one cassette which I don't have an issue with and tank toilet which lasts for weeks....
As said DONT. Let anything other than paper down the toilet.. Even nappy wipes will bind up in macerating pump!!
Yes NOT. Nice having septic water running down your arm, shoulder .. Yes I change my grand kids ... If I had the choice I'd fir the boxed or storage toilet ..

Hi hound dog and welcome to this great forum.
We have a simple thetford cassette loo which works rather well. We empty every other day or when required.
I would hesitate to take on a black tank as you have to move the whole RV to the dump point rather than a small cassette, then again thats my opinion. If you choose a tank then a porta poti would be my next investment for the times you cant empty.

Most towns have dump points .. In any case they should both be emptied into them..

There is some great advice here, and good reasons why too, I would think a Black water tank of the capacity to suit your needs keeping in mind the limits of weights gets very important, and speaking as a Boatbuilder now retired a good quality marine macerator toilet will serve you well as long as only what you eat goes down it. Yes when its full you will have to move the vehicle to a pump out station. Tank indicator is also very important as well. Now in saying that we have a Dometic VT2500 with cassette. I fitted a switch to isolate the vacuum pump, as the system as supplied wants to recharge the tank all the time. Problem is the seal on the toilet flush wears quickly and keeps running, so a simple switch near the toilet fixes this I think the new Vt2500 have a switch on the panel now but not sure. I just found it easier to carry the 20 litre container every couple of days easier as we spend long periods parked in one spot. Safe Travels.
