I used to make up my own baits using borax & honey or caster sugar in jar lids put in cupboards etc. Still do it from time to time to use up the jar of Borax.
These days I just use the baits that you can buy at supermarkets plus sprays that you apply to where they track into the van.
Never been a fan of the talc powder around wherever the van touches the ground. Too many spots to miss. Some use the corner steady plates that have the ability to form a water moat. All too much trouble for me but some swear by these methods.

Hey Cowboy,
If you never want to see another ant again, park you van up have lunch wrap a sheet of plastic around the bottom of the van holding with a bit of duck tape and put a Mortin roach bomb under neigth the van, and go for a walk for an hour. roll up your sheet for next time. No more ants for six weeks.
Works a treat, each time we go over to the west. They go and visit all the overnighters saying across the way.

I agree with Cupie, I put a few drops of liquid AntRid in various spots when I notice them and it doesn't take long to get rid of the little blighters. Cheers C

We've been sat in one spot for 4 months, usually suffer badly with ants around but this year my mate gave some Fortune 500 insecticide, sprayed once in April around the van and underneath and not seen one ant !
I hate the little buggers as we've had several nests before under our floor, not anymore.

We use ant sand, at home and away, it is suitable for rainy conditions, and gets rid of the little sods in a couple of hours.
Sprinkle a little around the stabilisers and wheels where they can gain access, you don't need much, the little darlings think they are being given a treat and race off with it to Mama, next thing, Bingo, no ants.

is it correct that ants wont cross over the rubber tyres, so will only come into a van through plastic and steel touching the ground??

Nope, if the ants are aggressive enough or maybe hungry ! I've seen them march across tyres, talc and a host of other things. We picked up a massive infestation 2 years ago along the Murray, only poison would halt them when they were very active, also this variety wouldn't touch baits.
Have since discovered their are two types of ants in general, one eat sweet things, one eat protein, so baits must target both to be successful.
Not sure if it works but someone told me to mix borax with honey and peanut butter, this supposedly will attract both types.
As said previously though I now spray the area if we are staying for a while, simple and very effective.

We use a product called Crunchy Crawly, only been able to get it in QLD so far, but found another thing the same - made by Brunnings (not Bunnings) - and it works the same way. In a spray bottle, we spray under the wheel arches etc., and no ants in here!

Agree with Banjo.Fortune 500 is great and when sprayed on the underside of the van has a residual effect and extremely toxic to ants including termites and also great for the lawn to rid it of army grubs. Can be used on veges and crops but has a holding period prior to use.Read the directions and follow them carefully.

We always carry a can of Outdoor surface spray the kind that is supposed to last 3 months. I spray all the drop down stabilisers as well as the jockey wheel and if the ants are real agressive around the tyres also. Be sure to also spray your sullage hose and a portion of the water hose connection. Also another trick is to loop your sullage hose over itself creating a makeshift "P" trap to stop anything crawling up the hose.
If it rains you will need to respray.

A quick spray of the cheapest surface spray at ground contact points.....works great. ( just a quick spray, don't need to flood the points )
