Does any Nomad know if it is possible to have a 6.5db gain AND a 9.0db gain aerial connected to a UHF CB via switch, so that one can switch from one to another as the landscape changes?
Many thanks in advance, KB

Hi;
Yes you can have a swich to change over to differant antennas and there are commercial units on the market that would do the job. The problems is at the frequenceys of the uhf cb band ( 477 Mhz ) some swiches are lossy and the good ones can cost a lot of money.
All antenna switches have what is called insertion loss. This loss can make a big differance to your transmitted signal and make your 9dB antenna act like a it gone deaf on receive. Most antenna switches have a loss of a couple of dB's, and the effort not worth it, so in the end being able to change over antennas the best way would be to change over coaxes at the back of your radio. That way there would be no losses.
Without trying to upset the apple cart may I suggeest 'Techies' is more suited to this type of question. That makes it easier for future reference and finding, for all of us and others joining the gang.

I would not bother. Not worth the trouble for 2.5 dB difference. There would be a little sense in doing that if you were switching from a 2.2 dB to 6.5 dB antenna. Also I am not inclined to use an antenna of more than 6.5 dB gain. Anything more is too directional in the vertical plane for mobile use.

Jack, that is why "Techies" has been set up as a seperate 'sub forum' for things like this thread.
Why have other 'sub forums'
It was a suggestion to Keiron to get the best possible outcome to his question. Not saying he didn't get it here.

No, just trying to reinforce the old concepts. Generally I don't answer tech questions if they are not in the tech sub-forum. Things work better when some form of order is maintained. What we need in Greynomads is a report post link in the answers so we can easily get threads posted in wrong sub-forums shifted to their correct place.

And you're explaining it to me instead of the person you need to explain it too....

I guess that I am the target of jibes for not using "techies corner".
Normally I would ignore such un-informed diatribe, but for the serious suffer(s) of us "not-so-smart", I will make this exception.
I only posted here because I could not find suitable answers / information in the "corner".
Now I will retire, and go back from whence I came. And try not to upset or offend................

As I said at the risk of "upsetting the apple cart". Looks like the apples have fallen on the ground for sure and gone everywhere.
Maybe I just won't suggest anything anymore.
Keep Safe out there all.

there is one that has 0.12db insertion loss.
CSW-201G coaxial switch.
I think they're about $70 from ebay or $100 from Benelec.
Thanks Guys. Perfect solution. KB
