I have been thinking of updating to a motor home that has a blackwater holding tank as one of the boxes that will be ticked with a new purchase, however after reading the recent post regarding access to dump sites I would like to hear of any other problems associated with blackwater holding tanks....

Being a Solo traveller it's a no brainer really for me. Canister.
I empty Friday and Monday as it works well for me. I could go longer but choose not to.
I remember being next to someone that had a tank and he also carried around a, I think, 20lt drum with scew top lid for the times he couldn't get his Den to a dump point. He just emptied into the drum then took that and emptied it. Worked well too. Could be a bit smelly but only for a short time. I suppose it depends on how long you go between empties.

It is really horses for courses. A tank is a no brainer for us as we usually stay in a place for 4 weeks plus. We have 2 cassettes which gives us a bit more flexability without having to drive the motor home to a dump point, sometimes some distance away. To see people messing around with a hose trying to get a flow into a dump point just confirms my decision. I have a fold up trolley to wheel cassette to dump point to save my back (take our s***t for a walk). One problem with a cassette is determining if it will last until morning. With 2 cassettes when full just change and have 4 days before needs to be emptied.
This is my opinion for my circumstances but I would not cbject to someone choosing a tank, as it probably suits them.

We also use a 20-litre plastic jerrycan for times when a dump point is not available, and when we're house-sitting we can use it to transfer to (usually) an outside access point. We're quite skilled now at not spilling anything!
Meanwhile, the 80-litre tank gives us leeway between dumps. And we don't have any trouble getting it to flow - we have a marine flushing toilet with inbuilt macerator (chews up everything!).
As Neil has said: horses for courses.

G'day George & woof. Quit happy with black water tank on me 5th wheeler empty every couple weeks when moving around. Just need more dump points. I have a 20l tank that I dump it in at greens then take it to Kyabram when going shopping . good mix hay. All that red wine makes it a bit off sometimes ???

We also have Vacuum flush marine style toilet ... agree with all the comments for them .... Also they are 100% enviro friendly .... No chemicals, so if no other alternative it can be dumped into any toilet system! Only negative so far for us is the space the system takes up ...... We bought 2nd hand so it was not our decision to change from the cassette. Service for them is limited We had to go to the Seabreeze dealer on the Gold Coast to find out how they work, have it serviced and find out how to maintain as Avida Gold Coast where we purchased from had no idea!
BTW, many people are saying there is no place in Qld to have these units serviced, repaired or get parts .. Not correct ....... Seabreeze (Dometic) have their premises on the Brisbane side of the Gold Coast and are great if you need help in that area ..... Melbourne is a long drive from Cairns! generally they are not installed or serviced by the motorhome manufacturer these days.

Black water tanks are an excellent way to go. Just make sure you have plenty of capacity to carry you over for some time.
