Their major wild fires now are an ill wind for us here in the Southern Hemisphere, when they have a bad season like this we very often follow them within the next 3-6 months.
Hope all our firies are safe

You could be right there aussietraveller, Here in the West, it's the wind that give us the warning,
When I was in the Brigade I used to dread waking at around 2.00am and hear the wind whistling off the hills just behind us, It was a sure sign that we were going to be in for a hard time, this usually proved correct, just about every night the wind would start and with-in half a hour, off went the Pagers. Sure glad those days are behind me now.

Been there ,done that . You can only fight a fire like that from the air or control lines kilometers away and sometimes that doesn't work.our guys and gals are only there in a logistics capacity thank goodness so probably won't get the hot stuff but still very nasty all the same.

I agree with you there, I could never understand that mob of American "fire jumpers" who leap into the fires from aircraft , as far as I am concerned there's a lot of easier ways to commit Suicide than that !!.

The fire travels so bloody fast it even catches freeway traffic unawares!
You're not wrong about how fast fire can move, Delta 18,
As exa41 said, '' Been there Done that '' I recall one fire I attended where we had to travel at better than 20kph just to keep up with the head fire, this may not sound very fast to some people but, Who can run faster than that for any length of time to keep out of danger !!
And remember fire can double it's speed going up hill,

Hi Jim ,as you will know ,when we were fighting the Blacksaturday fires ,people coming from King lake were breaking the speed limit just to keep ahead of the fire.others poor soles just evaporated in the flames ,I guess it just takes balls to drop into a firefight but not for me. I have done too many extremely large fires and have too much respect .
