learnt something today well i think i did. i pulled the covers of a cvan air con to see how it worked . i mean i knowhow an air con works but not the heater side of it . i always thought there was a heater elament to do the job . not be so from what i worked out the air con switches to reverse flow ..
now to put it in terms that i can understand and some of you other not so technical minded people can understand an air conditioner has 3 major parts 2 radiators and a compressor . when you turn it on it pump coolant through the system 1 radiator gets hot and 1 gets cold the cold 1 is your air con and the other desapats the heat . when you turn it to heat it happens in reverse and the cold 1 gets hot and so on . now there are other parts to make it work but i just wanted to put it into laymen terms . I'm sure some one will tell the truth lmdo

Dibs - you have got it in a nutshell. I'd be lost trying to explain it but you've done it. They should really be call heatpumps I think.

So, it would be ummmm a reverse cycle airconditioner?

Our Coleman has a heating element to supply the heating cycle.

well today i discovered there are 2 different types yes paul just like yours the demotic we were working on today had an element in it ( and a rats nest ) . it was a pommie van .
yes troopy i guess thats were the name comes from i didn't know what it meant as this was really the first time i had any thing to do with a air con.

Its all about "Latent heat of vaporisation", the heat required to change the state (liquid to a gas, or gas to a liquid) of a substance. If you put your hand on the side of your vans gas bottle when no-one is using gas the surface will all be the same temperature. If you feel the surface when gas is being used, at the liquid level the bottle will feel cold. This is the effect of the liquid turning into a gas. In order to change its state, it takes heat from its surrounding, hence refrigeration. With the air con or fridge we want to keep the gas, and so we need to turn the gas back into a liquid.
By increasing the pressure of the gas via the compressor, the gas is returned to a liquid, but in order for it to change its state, it releases heat, (this is either pumped outside, or used for heating).
And so the cycle goes on again.

It's also the way mammals including us humans keep cool, so maybe we are airconditioners as well.

Yep so true, that's why they hung a canvas bag of water on the vehicle bumper, the canvas is kept moist, vehicle forward speed aided evaporation, hence the contents were cooled.

Ive gotta say I have my aircon, its noisy and is only useful for very hot days.
Not too sure I made the right decision in keeping it in my caravan plan.. fans and my dyson fan heater work a treat except on ultra hot days.. Then its the supermarkets..
