Today, at the Mudgee field day, there were three RMS inspectors (1xsydney HQ, 1xParkes, 1xDubbo) on their stand and I discussed a number of issues relating to caravan owners, one of which was the height of the number plate issue of which they all were aware of and advised YES that caravans whose number plate is above 1300mm is DEFECTIVE and should not have been registered.
The number plate requirement for caravans registered in NSW has been advised as late as the late 2007 clause 61(2)(b) and Vic in 2009 REG48(1)(b), Tasmania in 2010 REG63(1)(ii), South Australia in 2010 REG24(24)(a), WA REG25(1) and NT see sect16. So the caravan should have no excuse of not complying. The police and RMS inspectors are only enforcing the law.
If you are an owner of one of these non-compliant caravans you should contact the seller and ask what they are going to do to make your van compliant and legal.
At the field day, there were two caravan brands on display, New Age and Kingdom, these vans on displayed were all not number plate compliant.
The sales staff were not that interested in this issue, so I assume they are prepared to sell non compliant product......they just want the sale and no responsibility.
The driver of the tow vehicle takes the penalties....fine and loss of demerit points.
We owners need to make our voices heard...contact the seller and do not put your head in the sand and hope we do not get caught. No use complaining after you have been booked.

So, in a country being invaded by "illegal" immigrants, fighting terrorists in the streets, trying to stop the scourge of "ice" and ensuring that our womenfolk are not bashed by their partners, our esteemed Police Force are totally engaged in stopping and fining recalcitrant grey nomads for having a number plate that is too high off the ground.
Somehow, I just can't get excited about this issue.

I think it started in Queensland when Campbell Newman was Premier.
He wanted the number plates at eye level.

A little bit off topic ,but we have just 2day up here in Cairns had a 45 year old hoon driver fined $250 and loss of 2 demerit points for going thru a set of stop lights .And yet the caravaner from what I have heard was fined $450 and 3-4 demerit points .Correct me if I,m wrong..

yes it was reported on another forum that speed an red light cameras are set to read number plates that are less than 1300 mm so no part of your number plate maybe above 1300mm

I think it's just another revenu raiser designed for roadside cameras, just another way to gain access to the motorists wallet I can't see any other reason should be as long as number plate is clearly visable it's ok

not an easy thing to rectify. The plate can be moved easily, but how do you easily relocate the light to illuminate it

we have a new "all terran" van and our next door neighbor has a new full off roader. Both from a major RV buider. The top of my rego plate is about 5cm above the 1300, but the neighbours one is above 1300 measured to the bottom of the plate.
The enforcement authorities should be taking action against manufacturers of non-complying goods - in this case for rego plates.
As Tamey has pointed out, the plate can be moved easily (although you then have 4 holes in the body of your RV) - but they make the electrical cable so short within the van, you will probably have problems moving the rego plate light
