Gday folks. Kim and I have travelled from Maitland NSW up the coast as far as Emerald and are making our way towards Katherine before the wet season. We are really over the crowded caravan parks and have only stopped at 1 free camp site and it was worse (Dawson river). It would be awesome to know about relatively quiet parks and free camps along the way especially in areas where there are interesting things to explore. Is there a site that is dedicated to this kind of info? We are towing a 21 foot Lotus dirt roader and are happy to take the longer routes. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all the people who responded to our enquiries about the Donohue hwy.

IT is very hard to tell where all the free camps are has it will will depend on where you are when you start thinking about stoping for the day , Your best idea to buy camp 8 or Wiki camps App .

I feel that is a bit of an oxymoron (a bit like military intelligence.) It's the interesting things that attract people and create the popularity of the parks.

At this time of year especially, most parks and free camps are pretty busy.
Outside Emerald is Higher Ground which is a caravan park of sorts. Doesn't get too busy.
There are more stops, free and paid, but you would need to accept that this is one of the busiest times to travel up this way, sorry.
It is called tThe Grey Nomad northern migration.

Just look for stockpile sites and gravel pits along the side of the roads, Rod
