we had a similar problem - but in this case it was with Australias biggest private health insurer who continued to take out monthly direct debts from our account despite cancelling our policy with them and despite having received an email from them demanding to know why we had the temerity to cancel with them.
Despite several "very to the point" phone calls from me to their so called help centre and visiting their retail outlets, they couldn't manage to cancel our DD.
I went into a branch of the Bank we are with, told them that this outfit wasn't cancelling our DD. The bank teller emailed their support centre as we stood at the counter and the Bank cancelled the DD.

Well known problem in the bushwalking community. The fine print puts it on you to cancel, otherwise automatic renewal of subscription occurs. Further problem then is that the billing is done thorough a third party billing agency in the States. Many a story of not being able to contact Spot to cancel and attempts to contact the billing company also go unanswered. One way to avoid further payments being taken from a linked account is to contact bank and explain the withdrawal was unauthorised. What I had to do was cancel the linked card and get a new one. Be very sure to keep records of all attempts to contact both Spot and billing agency and emails to bank. One person I know was chased by a debt recovery agency four years after cancelling her card as her way to get their attention.

I had a look at my account and found the following information
To cancel your Service Plan, you must notify SPOT in writing within thirty (30) days of the end of your Service Plans Term. You must email your notice of cancellation to customerservice@findmespot.com and provide your name, your address and the ESN from the SPOT for which you want to cancel service (located in the battery compartment, under the battery of your SPOT). You may call our customer service center at SPOT at 1-866-OK1-SPOT (651-7768) or from outside of North America:+1 (408) 933-4518 to cancel or if you have questions. You still must confirm in writing by sending an e-mail to customerservice@findmespot.com.
Cheers

Several years ago I recommended your service to a fellow Australian forum member at thegreynomads web site. This member has been trying to cancel her account as she no longer requires the service and apparently her emails have gone unanswered.
Other members have indicated that this is a well known problem with your service in the bushwalking community.
Would you kindly advise how she needs to go about getting her account cancelled.
thanks
Mike
