We are going there in a few weeks. Having not been there before, we keep hearing stories that it is a major climb up the mountain.
1) Is this the case?
2) which way did you go?
Been told that if you want to avoid the climb, you need to come in from Goodiwindi. Too long a detour.
Thanks, Larry

The Toowoomba range has just had a lot of work done to it have been up and down it in the last 2 month no problems , But which way are you coming from I don't follow the Goondiwindi bit , I did travel the Goondiwindi way , But you could go via Warwick but anyway to Toowoomba from south is no problem

It's just a long steady climb should be no problem unless you are overweight in relation to the towing load specification of your vehicle and your vehicle is in good order.

We went the range many times it's certainly worth the sights
Lots of trucks going but watch your breaks on the down climb I use to drop my gears and let the motor do the work
Went gundiwindi way too but as mentioned going Warwick way is better if you want avoid the climb
It's not as bad as the kozi mountains for sure

Thanks to all that replied. We will be coming from Casino. Goondiwindi was put to us as an alternative route as the climb is not as pronounced.

There is 2 crossing over the Range 1 the Toowoomba Range , 2 The Cunningham Gap , I think the Toowoomba range is better , It does not matter which way you go Goondiwindi or Warwick you still have to go down the Range or the gap . There no mountian between Goondiwindi and Toowoomba

Larry . Why don't you go to Kyogle , Woodenbong , Killarney , Warwick , Toowoomba .
I went up & down Toowoomba Range last week-end . I have been up & down in a B-Double .
Now , some Road-Trains are using it . Yes it Has improved that much .
Woodenbong to Killarney , although sealed it is ok , and I take it a bit slower along it .
You only have one hill , & that's up to the Woodenbong turnoff . That would be the Only
way, all the rest have reasonably big climbs for you - Casino to Tenterfield . Grafton to
Glen Innes . You could go Gatton towards Warwick , then back to Toowoomba . I have
Not done that road .

I second that. Know that the road from Woodenbong to Legume (just before Killarney) is slow going in most parts. Road surface is quite uneven and many corners are unsafe over 30 K an hour. Lots of roadwork going on on that road so it is getting better but approach with a relaxed attitude and there will be no problems. I did all those roads within the last month or so.
Don't forget that Woodenbong has a quiet camp down by the swimming pool. Couple of bucks at the petrol station for self contained and a couple of extra dollars extra for power. Pub meal is recommended.

Then again you could drive east to Ballina. Head north on the Pacific Highway, turn off onto the Logan Toll Road which becomes the Warrigo Highway. Apart from 17kms of two way road just north of Ballina it is all four lane divided highway right to the bottom of the climb to Toowoomba.

I'll third that. Great scenery most of the way. Don't be in a hurry. Woodenbong to Legume is about 40k of rough road, although some sections have been repaired.
Killarney is a good stop. Good pub, good butcher stop. Some fantastic day drives from Killarney, especially the 14 creeks crossing road, if you have a 4wd. It crosses the condamine river 14 times in about 20k.
Killarney view c/p is a good stop.
Cheers Pete

We climbed the range recently with the van fully loaded. Select the right gear, take your time no problem!
