I did not realise that the size of the cassette on my new thetford toilet was so small, (around 17Ltrs) as I am aiming to be self sufficient for weeks rather than days, does anyone know if it is possible to plumb the thetford directly into say a 100Ltr black water tank fitted with a macerator?
If it is, then the next question is how does one empty and clean such a large tank -- I guess you would have to have a dedicated pipe or something?
Any ideas or experience greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I see no reason why not. There are 5th wheelers around with black water tanks. You would need to rig up a hose with a pump and empty into a dump point when needed. Just keep in mind the extra weight you would be carrying around until empty.

You could also consider carrying a spare cassette which maintains a toilet facility until you can empty the full one.

Hi Doug.Yes you could, however it would be a custom design waste from the bowl on. I have fitted a number of setups direct to a storage tank that has a large valve fitted to it and I would supply them with a piece of 75ml flex hose so they could pull up at a dump point . In saying that all of these units were those vacuum systems. The only other one was a normal domestic wc suite with a small flush . As a plumber ,if I came to your unit and quoted this project I would say 3 things.1,yes it can be done . 2 I would have to fit something to open and close a slide to keep the bowl and tank sealed from oneanother. 3 I suspect that aside from a hole in the floor that I would make perhaps you may need to replace the whole suite should you wish to go back to a normal system . Cheers John

I think the much more realistic option would be a second cassette as it means you are carrying a lot less weight and as was me said there are lots of public toilets and dump points around.

Possible but highly impractical IMO.
We carry an extra cassette but never needed it so far, a friend with a big US 5'er finds emptying his large black tank very awkward so uses a smaller tank, like a big cassette with wheels, not sure of the size but he decants the big tank into the smaller one and wheels it to the dump point.
Well for better or worse I decided to buy a macerating toilet (marine) and a 100Ltr black water tank. So I now have a brand new Thetford toilet that I will be putting on gumtree I guess. Thanks for the replies. Actually the decision was also helped by design space and having to cut through a double skin with 45mm gap between and thinking of how to seal that properly. The easier route is straight into a tank at the back of the bus.
To a large blackwater tank.
