Nope that is the easiest way (and avoids tolls too). Go over the Westgate Bridge and follow the Westgate Freeway(does go to Geelong) to the ring road exit and that takes you to Hume Freeway, probably 35/40 minutes all up. A bit quicker but with more deviations is to take the Westgate Freeway towards the city and exit over the Bolte Bridge to the Tullamarine Freeway (Citylink) and you will need to pay tolls and then exit onto the Ring Road to get to Hume. Any other way is through city streets and will take MUCH longer.
Click on the blue "details" in the 'white box' on the left hand side and it will expand to show the directions to follow.
You can 'zoom in' to look at the "blue" route shown to get a better idea of the way. When you get on the Tullarmarine Tollway it is straightforward and then turn onto the Western Ring Road exit and then to the Hume Hwy to head north.
Here a couple of snips (and attached below) to show the route a little better.
Instead of heading East on the Westgate & over the Bolte, go West (Geelong direction) and the take the Western Ring Road. You actually turn right just before you go under the Freeway. I think if you do same as rockylizard's map but say AVOID TOLLS that will put you on the Western Ring Road. The route given from the pier to the freeway is riddled with speed humps and tiny roundabouts. May need to continue along Beach Street, Bay St, Graham St, Williamstown Road to get to Todd Road. Busses & trucks use that route to get to the Freeway and if heading anywhere other than East, go over the Westgate bridge to avoid tolls.
I hope the link works. When are you on the ship? We are leaving Devonport on Saturday 4th July.

I could end up with the 2 of us lost. There will be a procession of caravans and motorhomes leaving the ship. Almost half will be heading for the Western Ring Road, some will have a UHF. The first 10mins is usually the most stressful.
You never know where we might be, we might even bump into each other somewhere. I always look out for Tassie number plates.

When you get off the ferry take the first exit off the first roundabout. This will put you in Beach St which has several minor road humps. Then you will reach a T junction at which you can turn left into The Boulevarde and follow that until it turns right into Todd Rd. The Boulevarde, which follows the beach until it turns into Todd Rd is quite narrow with "traffic calming" sections (crazy name for them). (I have used it several times and my MH is 10m long and 2.5m wide and I just take it carefully. In fact we normally stop there and have breakfast.
Continue along Todd Rd and turn right at the roundabout immediately BEFORE the Western Ring Rd. and after a short distance you do a 180 degree turn that puts you up on the Western Ring Rd heading out of Melbourne.
Cheers

A free map is available from the store on the ship, located near main reception.

Hi Guys
if you have either a full size van or MH, do not go up Montegue St, there is a very low bridge (approx) 2.9mtrs. Tom Tom likes to take this way.
Head south down Beach St and turn left onto Albert Rd then left onto Princess H'way this will get you onto the ring rds. There is a rail bridge on Albert Rd but its approx 4mtr so you should be right.

This may be the shortest route but it is not the best. I have done it once but would not recommend it, tight roundabout, lots of overhanging tress. It can be negotiated but there are better routes.

This is the way I like to go. There are two or three different options to get to the Westgate Freeway.
