Even though he was dodgy at times he created a lot of employment and put WA on the world map.

I saw the Four Corners show many years ago where they reported that Bond's company, Dallhold, had a profit of $80 million for the year and, because of tax havens in the Cook Islands, the Australian Tax Office owed Dallhold $8,000 for that year.
At the time, I had just received a notice from ATO saying that I owed them $8000 on a measly income and I was incensed.
It evolved in my mind that I was paying Bond.
Stuff him, he was a thieving prick that fooled an entire nation.

A thief .I know of folk that had small companies that went to the wall because of this prick .He said he was broke but managed to live his final years in comfort in England. Clearly the memory problem came good for him too ! Nah! no sympathy for persons of his arrogance .St Peter should close the gates and say "no vacancies " .
"But his empire crumbled in the 1990s, eventually being bankrupted for $622 million, which still stands as the second-largest personal bankruptcy in history.
He also served time in jail for siphoning off $1.2 billion to prop up his ailing Bond Corporation.
After a 19-year absence from the nation's rich list, Mr Bond resurfaced in 2008 with a personal fortune estimated to be worth $265 million."
Perhaps that money should have been used to repay some of those who lost out because of his bankruptcy.

Yes a lot of people will be happy to see the end of him. I feel sorry for his family though as it's not nice to lose a family member. Condolences to his family.

A good example of a good ol fashioned robber Baron in full flight
Does good and bad most Aussies cheered long and loud when
He won the American cup and were then amazed at his finacial
Depredations and in most cases opportunity is a fine thing
I suspect that many would do the same given the opportunity

Your last paragraph is exactly what I was thinking Vic,
Can't see why the powers to be, can't grab all his estate and pay the many Mums & Dads who lost their life savings to this Mongrel , not to mention the Staff at Bell brothers Trucking Co who at one time operated the largest fleet of trucks, servicing the North West, but all lost their jobs over night when Bond cleaned out the till.
Condolences to the Family, may he rot in hell. !!!

A modern day Ned Kelly but I will never forget the day his team won the Americas Cup.
RIP Mr. Bond.

Perhaps those who lost their money via him will make a claim on his estate, I hope so.
Like him or hate him, he certainly was a larger than life figure. See also 10 things about Alan Bond;
We accidently bumped into Dianna Bliss in public a few years not knowing who she was, she certainly was no snob and was delightful to talk to, while talking to her he walked up to her and it dawned on us who she was. May she RIP.

OK, Now let's give credit where credit is due. John Bertram and his fantastic crew won the Americas Cup. Bond just used our money to fund it. Say what you like about him. but he was a corporate crook, and the dick head got away with millions of dollars of other people money. Ok, he faced the music, but he waltzed to the happy tune. No !!! No!!! NO praise from me. Although I guess there would only be one grateful person who does not think he is a dirty prick, of course that is the late Kerry Packer would think upon him as being Father Christmas.
May the devil treat him the way the devil treats everyone else.
Rot in hell Bond, because Mr Packer is in heaven enjoying his Polo, and watching the Aussie heading to Lords for the Ashes. God bless Mr Packer Jay&Dee

The America's Cup was a great achievement for the designers of the Australian Boat (winged keel etc) and the crew who sailed her in what is a rich mans sport event, funded by Bond using others money which will never be recovered.
I wonder how much of Bond's money (read investors) was siphoned off to secret locations or businesses owned by family members before he went into bankruptcy? He still managed to live in expensive homes here and overseas while accumulating another fortune elsewhere later using what money? Other than his accommodation at state taxpayers expense during his prison term in WA.
It will be interesting to see who turns up at his funeral, I am betting Bob Hawke will be there among others.
Thanks everyone. I'll close this down now. Everyone's had a good say and a forum for the grey nomad lifestyle isn't probably the place to discuss this topic in great detail.
