Besides being more compact, the folding lotus flower wind shroud reflects the heat up to the cooking surface so it's more efficient. I've just tested it boiling the kettle and it's noticeably faster than the old one
Just make sure those maggots aren't on a hot chop mate.
Might look into one then. Cooker not maggot.

At a guess I'd say that if you wrapped aluminium foil around the splash tray on the banned cooker it would be every bit as safe as the lotus one. Is the new one very stable? (feet in pic don't seem flat).
Certainly would take up less space.

Yeah Denis, but I wouldn't even bother with the tinfoil mate, there's nothing wrong with the units that got banned. Any piece of equipment can be dangerous if misused... just another case of a loose nut behind the wheel.
The feet on the little stove just needed a bit of tweaking with the pliers, it's plenty sturdy enough for what it's meant for, which is a skillet or kettle. I won't be putting a 20 litre camp oven on there... that's the kind of idiocy that got the other one banned... not that I'm throwing mine away.
I still actually prefer the old style for cooking breakfast for example, but the little one knocks it out of the park for a quick cuppa.
Thanks Steve, I'll continue to use our banned unit as well but might get one of the lotus ones for tent camping.
Regards

Ive been using the single burner cooker to the right of Steves pic for about 15 years now. On our current trip East, we forgot to pack it and then they were all banned and all you could buy with the gas cannisters.
Then in a country town, they had a great pile of them. I asked why they were selling them when they had been withdrawn (NSW) and was told that this particular model wasn't on the withdrawn list and was safe to use.
Bought it ($20) and looks just like the one we have back at home. We just don't use it in our 'van and don't use an oversized frypan or pot so that heat and flame is deflected downwards onto the canister.
So far - all good

Yep, you'd be a mug to throw it away... or to stop using it for that matter.
They're still for sale in the US, the UK and most likely the rest of the world as well. It's only us Aussies and Kiwis that are too stupid not to blow ourselves up, and need our politicians to treat us like babies
Cheers, Steve.

I was talking to the staff at Kangaroo Tent City this morning. They were claiming they have seen a new Gasmate model that has been going through type approval. It has some additional safety features. They expect it to be on the market in a couple of months or so.

Hey Peter. Yeah - I reckon the one I bought recently was non-approved and therefore "not safe", but was identical to the ones we've been using since our children were kids (and they have kids now). We are just more careful with them - maybe the cannisters are not as good as they were, but we just keep the heat and flames off the tanks

looks like you have all bases covered, see you have a 2 burner stove, the old single burner and a new lotus stove.

Are these cookers approved in Australia?
Why I ask is that I see on ebay all these cookers come from China, England Philippines etc but none are sold from Australia.
I am still using my banned Primus one as it has been good for many years. I just make sure we use it outside so we can vacate quickly if anything does happen. I hope some new approved models are released soon.
Also do you think the gas cylinder supply could dry up since no new propane cookers are being sold?

Hi Zuby, I can only assume they're approved because mine came through customs no problem. But since most of us are still using the 'banned' ones, all I care is that I have it now. The butane canisters are used in many other devices, such as heaters, brulee torches etc, which are all still being sold here, so I don't think there'll be any problem with their continued availability.
I'd say that within a few months at most, either the old ones will be re-approved, or there will be new approved models available. I can't see the Chinese leaving a gaping hole in any market unfulfilled for too long

Hi
Sorry to inform you that getting through customs means absolutely nothing as far as meeting Aus Standards are concerned
That is not their job !
The only indication is having An Aus approval number
All the crap that gets recalled came through customs, some with absolutely NO APPROVALS
That is the perils of Ebay buying.
The whole situation is a mess & has led to deaths!!
If your stove is prior to the recall dates it should be OK
That is why the dates are given
It covers BATCHs that are known too or believed to have problems.
Physical similarity does not mean a thing
It is the correct function of the installed protection device that is the problem [not that it is missing]
There are no problems with any canisters, have not been recalled or a banned from sale

Is your stove one of the "lunch box" types that uses a gas canister that looks a bit like a pressure pack can for fly spray etc? I have been through the Primus USA site and they are not mentioned there. If it does not use the gas canisters then it is still approved. Have a look through this site and tell us what type stove you have.

Peter, I'd say Primus have taken the butane burners off their website until they source approved one. Here's a link to one, though I read 'out of stock' to mean withdrawn from sale.
I ordered one of these little cookers as an alternative to the banned units, and it's an absolute ripper

Steve, I like the look of that little unit for sure however there is a BUT.

There is NO protection for the canister at all apart from what you call the "Lotus Flower" and Looking at it, it would get pretty hot.
Obviously it meets OZ standards as I am sure you would not have got it.
I remember you talking about that a week or so ago and ordering it.
Now your better half can sit back and enjoy a nice wine while you cook the evening meal on YOUR new toy
No buts about it Dougy, canister stays as cold as a maggot
I have a laser thermometer and the highest temp I got on the canister was 34 deg.
Sounds good then Steve.
Just make sure those maggots aren't on a hot chop mate.
