In some extreme cases, where the driving is doing, say, 60 or 70 in a 100 zone, I think that's fair enough, especially when there is a steady flow of other traffic.

Seargent X did say "extreme cases." I normally do 90 kph on the open road, which I don't regard as extreme. If you do 90, rather than 100, you will use a quarter of a tank less fuel. Weekend before last, I went a couple of hundred K's north, to visit friends.
As a test, I did the recommended speeds coming and going, and no matter whether I was doing 100 in a 100 kph zone, or 110 in a 110 kph zone, every other vehicle on the road passed me, pulling away fast.
So I have no hesitation at going back to my normal speed, as no matter what, most vehicles will pass me anyway.

A ticket is fair enough if you're vehicle is capable of reasonable speed and you're just being a pain in the bum and holding up traffic, but you'd have to cause an accident resulting in death, and be proved to be negligent in order to get any jail time. Just another example of the media trying to stir up emotions with BS reporting.

40 kph is the lowest speed .. As they say no such thing as safe speed ..
40kph in the left lane is fine.. They can't have it both ways..
Some roads have bad ripples or potholes which make any speed dangerous..If I got a ticket ..
I would certainly take it to court ...
Keep in mind if your slowing traffic and building up behind .. You should "try " pulling over in track rest areas..

G'day. speed limits are the fastest you are legally permitted to do on the roads. they are NOT the slowest you must do . all speeds are meant to the speed that is safest that that you can do. when towing I try to maintain 90 kph . that is safe for me and that is that. on major highways I will always try to to get out of the way but if I think it is unsafe bad luck .I think Sargent X could be a figment of some bored junior journo

If it is a joke, fair enough but is a timely reminder that there are others using the road. I know when I first started out I was worried about the speed limit particularly on the highways, asked my truckie sister what she recommended.
95k's as that gives the trucks enough time to get past you, and they don't have to change down gears too much. DO NOT SLOW DOWN SHE SAYS, we will have worked out what we need to do. I will slow if I have spoken to the truckie once his cab is next to mine.
When on the country roads you may find me doing 70ks, but there is very little or no traffic.

I'm one that sits on 90kh as much as I can legally. With 8mts of 3.8t of van sitting on a 2" ball I am very comfy thankyou very much.
I always speak to the truckies as being an ex coach driver I do know what they have to put up with. Only today I let a big truck that I saw quickly catching up to me know I have seen him and when he is ready to go past and comes out I will then and only then slow and let him pass safely and quickly. I got a big thanks and we then chatted for a couple of mins. A big thanks mate again.
I caught up to him again in the next town at the servo we were both filling up at and ended up having an early lunch there. They do appreciate it when we comunicate.

maybee I am being picky and this was not the true intent of your post if so I am sorry but slow drivers get on my goat as it were Especially those who refuse to look in their rear view mirror and let others pass when safe to do so

Agree 100% with you Doug, truckies like all of us appreciate it when you talk to them.
We have had two way radio since the days of 27 mhz, would not be without it.

Santa, I spoke to quite a few truckies today while travelling the Bruce hwy and each and every one of them gave a pleasant thankyou as they cam back in from passing.
So the moral of the story is I spose, if you have a CB/UHF, use it, talk to guys in those big rigs and let them know you are aware of them and will take appropriate action when possible. Don't slow down until they are coming out to pass you as they need to keep their speed up to get past you.

When I was a kid my dad got a ticket for going too slow. Have always remembered it as the family joke has always been who gets a ticket for going too slow.

Ballast 2, this is not a junior journo but a guy old enough and possibly should be retired. He has had a bee in his bonnet about grey nomads for quite a while. Having said that, I also sometimes question the "facts" he presents. Incidentially, he lives on the Gold Coast and mostly, one suspects, drives between there and Brisbane. Nevertheless, I agree with others that we should tow our vans at a safe speed but also be very very mindful of following traffic and do what is right and proper...................let them pass..........whenever safe to do so.

Actually I reckon the journo in question is a pretty smart dude - the success of any newspaper article lies in how well read it is, and look how much interest this one has stirred up. As always, a good journo never lets the truth get in the way of a good story.

The main thing is, if you want to dawdle along smelling the roses on the way... don't do it on a bleedin freeway... Take a back road, it's much more picturesque and relaxing anyway...
