I've got some old aeronautical charts of that area from the 60's...about 25 of them for most of Australia which I could try to copy. They contain more info than the usual road map. Alternatively in 2nd hand shops/Lifeline they always have old road atlas's for sale from that era.
Good Luck.
EDIT...also have quite a few old 4 mile to the inch fabric backed maps from 1946 for most of Queensland which include every feature even tanks and bores. Old ****ies love poring over these charts (Toowoomba is home to many many retired ****ies).

Don't forget to check the Op-shops. You never know what you'll find there. I just saw a heap of Road Maps in one of mine today. None that old though.
Have you tried the Rare, and Second-hand Book shops ? I've seen old maps in them before today, and not out-rageously priced either.
Cheers,
Sheba.

I always look there first for anything I want KFT. Would you believe Marj. said she'd love to get a Doggie Carrybag before she left on Monday, and guess what I found at the Op-shop two days later. I'm taking it out to her next Tuesday, before she leaves the dam.
Cheers,
Sheba.

I have 1:250,000 maps for most of SA from the 60s, 70s and 80s, plus some areas at 1:100,000.
Send me a PM if they are of interest.
Cheers,
Peter

KFT hi
Is it service station style maps you are looking for or real maps.
I am having trouble throwing out old maps, Golden Fleece, Shell, BP style road maps and even some auto club ones from pre eighties.
Could you be a little more precise on what you would like.
I be home by the next weekend if that helps. Ralph.

G'day Ralph
mate just ordinary servo type road map will do.
I am particularly looking for S.A. from around the 1970-1975 era. But anything that shows SA roads will do.
Peter is looking to see what he has from that area
I am in no hurry so appreciate you taking the time

Here is a piece of an Amoco road map. It is undated, but shows the Stuart Highway before it was realigned and surfaced.
the 1:250000 maps Kingoonya, Gairdner and Torrens would cover the area I am looking into.
Yes mostly gravel back then with occasional bits of bitumen.
some sections were at the time undergoing rebuilding and I suspect some sealing as well.
I used to have quite a collection of old road maps from servos(they were usually free in those days) but it seems I have lost them during a move or a cleanup.
thanks mate

A section of the Stuart Highway a few km west of Pimba was notorious any time there was any rain. Our trip south in 1974 was wet all the way from Uluru and this was the scene along that stretch..........
Cheers, Peter
Second attempt with the pics....

And a sketch showing the 1:250,000 maps I have from the 60s.
The green line is the Woomera Range Road that was mostly bitumen, but "off limits" to the public.
Cheers,
Peter

that scene looks quite familiar, which is why we were allowed to transit the Woomera range.
as it was the trip took about 8 days.
It is quite a story and I should write it all down before my memory leaves me.
you were game doing those trips in a mini or even a Kombi.
might explain why you love the OKA.
safe travels
