It has been a problem for any aircraft being refuelled, probably more so on older aircraft like the Canberra Bomber, and the Mirage III due to having to refuel by a nozzle like you do your car, and the greater chance of copping a load of fuel on yourself. The problem with the F111 was that the guys doing the deseal-reseal in the tanks were also exposed to solvents which possibly makes it even worse.
Mirage airframe fitters had a high risk of getting serious fuel spills over their butt crack when they were bent over doing afterflight undercarriage checks, while someone was refuelling above them.... Especially if I was refuelling

I'm not a techo but I do know the old aviation fuel was a very pure Kerosene. We used to steal it for our kero heaters If refueling was a wide spread problem I am sure the unions would of been all over it in relation to civvie aircraft a long time ago I am not saying there have been no problems or danger from all refueling tho, just that it all came to a head with the F111 You probably Know a lot more about refueling than me and I bow to your knowledge, I didnt mean to repeat what you said

I used to buy Aviation Fuel, ie. Kerosene, by the 44, to run my Kero Fridge up on Cape York. Surely if the problem was from Kero, every-one who's used it for generations in Lanterns, Fridges, and Heaters, would have the same problems ?
Has to be another reason.

The RAAF added and icing inhibitor FSII to F111 AVTUR, so civvies knew nothing of this. You could smell it when doing fuel farm and tanker filter changes and it made us all itch and that's a fact.
Reseal/deseal guys lived in it and so exposure was greater.

Yeah, it's not just the kero, but the addatives for anti icing, anti fungal growth etc.
I hate what they did to the 111's. Smash and bury, after all that work to keep them going.. Why did I bother.

I too have a very soft spot for em too.
Read the posts to the end - there is info that I dug out that will help you to 'accept' their demise was as well handled as it could be - and in many ways preserved them into the future.
