At What Age Do Nomads Think Of Stop Towing Their Vans

Hi all,
What Would be the average age that Nomads give towing their vans away. We are only moving up to our van in December, and think we will still be towing till early eighties. that will give us 20 years.

I've locked myself out of the fourm's for the past two weeks. couldn't remember my past word, let alone how I set up my user name. Thank's to Cindy at Admin I'm up and running again. Very fusstraighting.
We are so excited wanting to let every one know that we have put a deposit down on a new snail to take us were we ever want to go in this great land of ours, in our upcoming retirement.
We have opted for a Jayco journey Outback poptop 17.55 with a loo/shower for the wife.Happy wife happy life eh! Delivery is in December so we can prepair and sell our Kimberly Camper, that has many extra's and is in good condition.We are based in the Nth West of Sydney if you or someone you know is looking for a top camper.
We brought late on the last day3.30pm at the Sydney supper show. They said to us that they needed to beat their Melbourne counter parts for the very first time and would accomadate us.
Well by the time I had added together my freebie wish list, it took only an extra 10 minutes for them to say yes.
On top of the show special price we got a 300mm frame extension, ESC sableiser control, the brake controller supplied and fitted to the tow truck, Extra spare wheel / tyre fitted in between the A frame.
I don't think I'm losing it just yet.Hope not anyway.

G'day. A good question and I'm not sure of the answer. I would like to keep doing this for as long as I can. By I ,I mean us. Have met people on the road who are in their late 80's. I don't think we will be fit enough to do that. My ideal time to stop would the day I woke up looking at the roots and not the flowers. Basically we will do it until we no longer enjoy it. We are only on the road about 6 mths of the year so that may help us.

I know of two locals with their own individual caravans who are in the mid eighties and still towing their vans, although these days don't venture out of their home state. I suppose a lot depends on your ability and state both physically and mentally.

Met a couple well into their 80's about five years ago. They were driving a 63 Holden, towing an old Vicount. Swapping yarns over a couple of reds she told me that she and her husband had run away from home in their early 70's and had not been back. She looked me in the eye and said, " Sonny, if we had stayed at home we'd be dead by now. Every morning we are up and out of bed early, going for a walk, meeting new people, seeing new things. We wait for the pension cheque to catch up, then we move on and do it all over again."
With that attitude I reckon they could still be on the road.

I come across people in their 40s who should not be towing anything. Like keeping a driving licence, once the reflexes slow sufficiently and the stiff neck prevents you looking right, left, and all around, give it away. Mates dad just turned 85 and passed his practical test in NSW, no worries. He is a lot safer than many I see on the road. For me, I'll be exclusively in a MH from the late 70s, if I make it.

We both turn 65 later this year. If we stay healthy 75 should see an end to our caravanning days. We'll still travel extensively after that but use different modes of transport & accommodation. Luckily we've been travelling & camping continuously since we were married in 1972. We didn't save it all until we retired thank goodness.

I don,t think it has anything to do with age.I mean how many folk have you met that were 85 yrs old and so full of life and going full on ....yet I have met others at 70 look very tired and have had enough so to speak . So really if you are not a danger to others first up and you can still drive and set up each night .just go for it ! Cheers John

I don't think age is a deciding factor. Health and driving ability are the deciding factors. The oldest couple I have met out with their van were aged around 98. They were at the NACC national rally at Lucindale. Neither had a walking stick or other aid to mobility. They belonged to the RACV CC and their friends were prepared to travel with them. They booked for the Forbes rally but did not get there as he had a leg infection. The average age for males is in the mid 80s and rising. There will be many of the current members who are presently in good health who will be towing still well into their 80s.

DD... I believe that when you reach my age (76) you will move the goal post forward another 5 to 10 years.
But yes!!! I, being the driver, will continue to tour until who knows.
But common sense will dictate when I hand in my towing licence.

We are 76 and 71 and going. Not yet tired of any of it and hope to go for an other 10 years God willing. We could give up the caravan for a small motor home though. We are just getting ready for the next leg where do not know but North. Getting too cold for the old bones cheers😅
