Hi all. We will be leaving Broken Hill in about a week and want to spend about 2 weeks travelling south to Melbourne. We have to take our van to north Melbourne and no doubt will have to rough it in a motel for a night while they do some warranty repairs, then plan to spend 3 weeks at Berwick racecourse CP (aka Akanooh) for the maximum time of 21 days so we can catch up on the big smoke and a bit of the southern areas.
Any suggestions for outstanding CPs or free camping areas you've been too recently between BH and Melbourne folks?
Thanks is advance (c'mon Doug - youre always good for an good idea and haven't heard from Jules and Marj recently)
Oh, and Kiwijim - love the new avatar - much easier on the eyes LOL

Yo Bruce , The world is your oyster on this route !! Hit Mildura ,go the Calder and sus the freecamps advice .Charlton is truly nomad friendly in particular but always visit the info mobs on the way.Or..... go down the Murray from Mildura ,heaps of free camping on the way down .Get to my town of Echuca and rest a bit then head down to Greens lake ,then off to Bendigo and play tourists .Study form on freecamps or Wiki but rest assured you will have a great journey any old way .! By the time you get to Berwick it will be cool so keep the warm clobber handy ! All the very best and welcome to the best state ! cheers John

In Oct 2013 we went from Broken Hill to the GOR - we stayed at free camps at Lake Panamaroo, Wentworth, Mildura. Hopetoun, and Ararat (a bit of a round about way but maybe one or two spots would be good for you). You can look at some photos and short reviews of these places in the albums section of our Facebook page, just scroll down the page till you reach the Victorian section of the trip.
I may be too late for this reply; we traveled up from Melbourne to Broken Hill recently, one of the places we stopped at was Yanga National Park at Balranald; free camping and free park entry, we camped right on the Murrumbidgee, just south of Balranald, on Mamanga Camp Road.
