Have not really paid much attention to it before but with all this talk about applying the GST to food decided that next time we did our weekly shopping I would check the docket to see what was what. Purchased cereals, frozen chips, sauces, meat, coffee, tea to name a few and none of these items had GST - however the packet of Coles Brand Rosemary flavoured Cracker Biscuits and a packet of Mrs Macs Oven Fresh Frozen Pies had 10% GST. Can someone enlighten me as to why these two items had GST and not some of the others, eg McCains Beer Battered frozen chips? Cheers

Don't you know how much of a cake attracts GST? well neither did John Hewson ...
Depends on the amount of processing , Fully cooked 10 % uncooked no GST , So the fact that McCains beer Battered are not fully cooked no GST.

I am pretty sure luxury items like your flavoured crackers, pies, and beer battered chips have GST applied. Things like plain frozen chips have no other item like the batter added so no GST. Although I did think frozen chips had GST
As for the cake, again, I am pretty sure a cake mix has no GST but if you bought a cake made up it will have GST applied. Same as in a bakery, bread, no GST but other items like scrolls etc and some fancy breads will have GST.
Confused? Why should you guys be different to me

Once again, the village idiot and his kronies are taking the easy road. Get the big corporations to pay their due taxes and there is the missing income. On ABC 7.30, it was reported this missing tax is in the order of $60 BILLION of untaxed revenue. Get that and leave GST alone.

Why not do both, follow New Zealands lead. Raise the GST and chase the corporate dollar.
NZ dollar is all but parity with Australia for the first time ever and the KIWI's are happy

Australians have been living beyond their means for years, we expect everything and don't want to pay for it.
Raising the GST to 12.5% and applying it to everything other than health care would go a long way toward solving our financial problems.

Wouldn't be easier if we got rid of all taxes and introduced a transaction tax every time a transaction occurred on a bank account. That way people or businesses that spent the most would pay the most and this would ensure we get tax from overseas online transactions and multinationals transferring money to low tax countries but then the 'new world order' would probably disagree.

Make the multinationals pay the same tax as everybody
else , as deverall ( and Dick Smith ) says, the problem would be solved.
Fat Joe won't do that though, they're his mates.

The Henry tax review a few years ago suggested that this style of tax would see Australia rolling in money and as the only tax would negate the need for tax returns. One has to wonder why a government would not implement it as it is so simple.
I believe some other countries do use this method but I do not know who.
just think about it, if everyone paid a 1% tax on every transaction the working classes would pay much less than presently and all overseas owned corporations would also be paying a fair share.
