We are first time travellers and will be caravaning from Perth to Queensland (via the top end). We intend to use free camping wherever possible and would like to know what we should take with us to enable us to free camp.
This is a trial to see if our bodies can handle caravaning.

We did the west coast and found many really lovely free camps in fact didn't stay in a caravan park. We have 2 deep cell batteries and found that they lasted close on 8 days, but if you are travelling every few days it shouldn't be a worry as they charge up again travelling. We have 2 x 95 ltr water tanks, using it conservatively it lasted around 4 days (we did shower daily). Food is difficult to come by and very expensive along the way so make sure you have plenty. Then just the obvious pre travel checks on the tow vehicle and caravan for safety as you don't want to break down out there.
De Grey River and Mary Pool free camps were my favourites. Enjoy your trip!

P.S. Forgot to mention Lake Argyle was superb was worth staying in this caravan park. The sunset cruise on Lake Argyle was fantastic too, but book ahead if you can or you may have to wait a few days before you can get on.

Camps 8 would be very handy if you don't already have a copy. Good spot light/powerful torch for night walks to see all the animals that come out at night, long handled shovel to use around the many great camp fires you will have, a sturdy frying pan for cooking outside on camp fires, a good outdoor light ( I have a petrol light which is excellent - economical and silent), 20 ltr plastic container of water in vehicle for drinking or emergency use, a few wire hooks to hang things, a few lengths of shade cloth to use as required to create your own shade, talc powder to keep ants o/of van(spread as required around legs struts & jockey wheel), good but not expensive camera to record trip and camp spots, small bird book, pieces of cut up cardboard (packs flat - but you don't need much anyway) to cover caravan vents when travelling in dusty areas. Just some ideas to consider.
Oh & most important, a sense of humour when things go wrong.
Enjoy - its great fun.
