The double cookers are ok and use the same canisters as the single.
I've still got mine, will use it when I need to but not in the van.

The main problem was people putting oversize pots etc on the stoves, & this over heated the gas canister. Or not putting the trivet up the right way when using. People not reading the instructions that come with the stove. So I gues its easier to just ban the sale of them.

They've only banned the single cooker. All canisters are still in the shops, I've just been for a walk around some.
The problem lies as others have said in not using the single cooker properly causing the canisters to explode.
The double cookers are ok as bigger allowing larger pan on without covering the canister area.

I agree with Daryl and Marj - its how you use it, not the product that's always at fault.
Im in Coober Peedy and theres about 6 shops that sell hardware/camping gear including the major servos and IGA. All of them have the single cooker brands that I seen banned in most other States. Don't know if theyre banned in SA as well - but obviously out in the country they apparently thumb their noses at these sort of withdrawal and banning notices

Main problem, as has been said, is too large a pot, forcing the flame/heat across to the canister which has been exploding.
Those canisters are only a glorified beer can under pressure, with no relief valve. So they explode when over heated.
Choice Online has an article on them also in this months news letter, based on NSW and SA banning them. choice.com.au March news letter.
Australia has safety standards for stuff like this, but too many company's are bringing in non compliant cheap imports from overseas, and of course we buy them because they are cheap, and even so they may be OK but pays to read the directions. If possible buy something that quotes Aust Standards on the stickers.
Our Gasmate is on the hit list too, so we are thinking we'll replace it with a compliant low pressure stove with a regulator that runs off a portable (Primus) gas cylinder.
Needs about a 2 metre hose so the gas bottle sits on the ground and the cooker on the table. (Outside only!)

According to the link below for ABC News item, the way I read this issue is that the cookers were banned from sale Australia wide early February ....... correct me if I am wrong. We still have our single and double cooker and will continue to use them with care. I wonder how long before those camping in van parks will see signs up "Lunchbox Cookers are not to be used in this facility"!
If there was an alternative to the cooker other than LPG gas or an open fire, then I would use it. Like many of us, we read safety instructions and use accordingly. Our cooker is not on the list, but that is no longer relevant as the ban covers all makes/models.

the cooker is at fault as it can heat up the canister when not used correctly
those CRV canister's have vents in the top of the can which release the pressure from the canister, to prevent an explosion
the escaping gas will catch on fire , so you have a fire instead of an explosion
there are some double cookers on the list not to use

How many times does the nature of the ban need to be explained. The ban had nothing to do with the use of the equipment but the retail sale of the equipment. If you already have one of these units and the associated gas cylinders there is no legal requirement to stop using it you just may find some difficulty in replacing the gas cylinders or buying new units. Consumers are not required to do anything.

Here is another slant - I wonder if one exploded/ruptured in your annexe and caused your van to catch fire and be totally destroyed, would not the insurance company argue that you were knowingly using equipment which is banned from sale and deny your claim?

If you bother to read it CAREFULLY ,you will see it has nothing to do with the gas cylinder as such, the problem lies with the over pressure safety shut of valve in the unit itself

My reading of the 'withdrawl notice' and the associated list is that some 2 burner types (including my U bute $100 one) are not to be sold in certain states. Had a look in Kmart here in Brissy yesterday & they had the old gas canisters but not burners for sale.
I have two single burner ones too that are too old & knocked about to read manufacturer details.
I'll keep using them.
Now you can have a go at me too if that makes you feel superior or whatever.

It Applies to ALL STATES & NT & CANBERRA
IT covers THAT ONE BRAND at this stage & the specified model numbers
No doubt other brands will, in time, also be issued with" RECALL "notices
At the present ,as far as I am aware rTHAT ONE brand is the only ONE that has had to issue a FULL RECALL under orders from the Com GOV dept.
Now I hope you can understand the differences
It indicates what the problem is & it is not the gas cannisters[it is the over pressure flame shut of valve not functioning as required

PeterQ, I am at a loss to understand the vitriol in your post other than your assuming that my post was directed at your post of the recall notice. It wasn't, it was directed at the number of previous comments regarding people believing they were no longer permitted to use this type of equipment and this level of confusion goes back to when the advisory notices were first issued by the NSW Dept of Fair Trading back in the beginning of March (a month before the recall notice you posted). There were a number of reports, at the time, of retailers who had over reacted by removing both the burners and the gas cylinders from their shelves thereby making it difficult to source replacement cylinders. These events produced a number of clarifications from government departments and individuals about the nature of the advisory.

The recall notice CONFIRMs the Problem with the specified brands/ model numbers
Those are the ones that have been PROVEN DANGEROUS & ARE RECALLED AUST WIDE At this point.
It is very likely that follow up RECALLS will be issued for other Brands& models, once they are inspected & checked
I do hope when I post Those , they are recognised & accpted AS OFFICIAL recalls with good reasons.
THEY DO NOT COMPLY TO AUST STANDARDS

Yes, that does what can happen if the can explodes But the can exploding is just the final chapter
IF the safety gas shut of valve does not function, even THOSE cans will release gas, which may well be ignited by the actual burner flame
Result, a Bloody big flame &NOT just in the burner !!!
The only safegaurd is a fully functional gas shut off valve so the burner is TURNED OFF before excess pressure builds up in the can
That is why it is a mandatory requirement under AUs standards for them to have a fully functional high gas pressure BURNER shut OFF vavle
Over sized utensels are then covered

I visited a local BigW & picked up a box of these meaning to replace all the old ones.
Had just about finished replacing the cans in the cookers & the spares kept in their cases (I have 2x single & 1 x double burner cookers ), when I had a look at a couple of spare packages of 'old' cans. Guess what? All but 6 of my 'old' cans had the venting device fitted/built in.
So now I have lots of spares. Which is OK too. I'll wait to see if my Ubute attracts a recall notice. I can replace the others over time as conforming ones come on the market at the right price.
Yes I know all about the missing/defective device on the cooker & the (still) risk of fire even with these vented cans.

Yes, that does what can happen if the can explodes But the can exploding is just the final chapter
IF the safety gas shut of valve does not function, even THOSE cans will release gas, which may well be ignited by the actual burner flame
Result, a Bloody big flame &NOT just in the burner !!!
The only safegaurd is a fully functional gas shut off valve so the burner is TURNED OFF before excess pressure builds up in the can
That is why it is a mandatory requirement under AUs standards for them to have a fully functional high gas pressure BURNER shut OFF vavle
Over sized utensels are then covered

I visited a local BigW & picked up a box of these meaning to replace all the old ones.
Had just about finished replacing the cans in the cookers & the spares kept in their cases (I have 2x single & 1 x double burner cookers ), when I had a look at a couple of spare packages of 'old' cans. Guess what? All but 6 of my 'old' cans had the venting device fitted/built in.
So now I have lots of spares. Which is OK too. I'll wait to see if my Ubute attracts a recall notice. I can replace the others over time as conforming ones come on the market at the right price.
Yes I know all about the missing/defective device on the cooker & the (still) risk of fire even with these vented cans.
