Went and bought 4 -200 X12 coach screws cut two heads off and welded two together,that gives me long one,s for soft ground,$3.10 each at the big green shed.
I have the 200mm screws and they have never come out of the ground, but I like the idea of making them longer. I bought a box at the big green shed and use L brackets and D shackles to tie down ropes/straps. Works a treat, best idea ever

In soft ground and sand, I like the polycarbonate type of pegs. The seem to hold pretty well and not that hard to pull out again. We picked up a few similar to this at a garage sale a while back.
There is a rather expensive peg called the blue screw peg that has wide threads on it the evidently is best for soft sand. However totally useless in the harder soils.

Hi Phil, yeah I have seen pics of them, they look like an auger. The poly pegs work pretty well in the sand though.

haha Troopy was picturing a double pointy ended screw, I guess that's the male thought. I was picturing a 200ml screw with a double hexy end ( 1 end welded ontop of the existing one ).... I guess that's the female thinking. Glad u put a pic in as now I know exactly what u did

Hmmm. There is an easier way to get 12-inch screws other than welding two shorter ones together. And as well as being galvanised they are 10 cents cheaper.
Right now on eBay there are packs of 30 twelve inch screws for sale for AUD$35.62 plus AUD$54.37 shipping (scream!) from American seller moparman0110. That makes a total of AUD$89.99, which divided by 30 comes to AUD$3.00 each. EBay conveniently converts US dollars into Australian which I have quoted.
I cannot recall which seller I bought mine from but they weren't galvanised. After I ordered then they only took about two weeks to be delivered.
Just thought I would let everyone know that.

For very soft Sand, eg. as on some beaches. The awning on the 4x4 is a bit of a worry
in even the slightest wind with all the conventional tent pegs.
Was out with our 4x4 club a month ago at Buffalo Beach (Australind WA) the sand was very soft and fluffy. One of the guys had a new awning on his car, I helped him to roll out.
He produced these Spade like Pegs/Anchors. They were magic. So I went home and made a pair the next day. The commercial ones are aluminium with a 2mm Stainless wire guy.
I made mine from 1.6 galv sheet 300mm long the fluke or spade part about 100mm wide (you can work it out from the pics) And used a piece of nylon line as a guy. I might fit a Wire guy when I get around to it. The New pegs work brilliantly.

I will pop my comments on this topic again. The best form of anchor in soft ground like sand, etc are the screw in dog tether that you can buy from $2 shops or pet shops. The screw thread is about 300 mm long and looks like a cork screw.but about 50 mm across. You just wind it in to whatever depth you want and attach you'd awning rope to the handle. Easy done And never had one come out of the ground even is soft sand.

Briche, I have looked at the dog tethers and where they look great for staying in the ground I am in need of something that I can use with the battery drill as arthritis and lack of strength in my hands makes these impractical. as wondering if it is possible to weld a nut to the top of these tethers and use the drill.

I'll have a look to see what scraps of sheet metal I have in the workshop. Uses a similar principle to the one involved in burying your spare tyre in soft sand or mud to make a winching point.
My favorite general use light weight pegs are several cut from old stainless steel oven racks. I have my eye out for a couple to use as BBQ grills .. Might have to wait for the next kerb side pick up in the local suburbs.
Will have a look in one of the local pet supermarkets for screw in tethers too.

BCF have got those pet tethers, I think if you weld a bolt head on top and use a power gun you could be in for a big surprise.
