This is an extract from the latest "Isaac Newsletter" (the council responsible for the above camps).
To reduce impact on the environment and due to limited facilities, camping will NO LONGER be permitted on public areas in CLAIRVIEW.
In ST. LAWRENCE & CARMILA camping is permitted on DESIGNATED areas and be CHARGED $10 PER NIGHT, per site.
"We will be increasing our presence and capacity to enforce local laws in coastal camping areas"
To assist campers, the Council will be ensuring appropriate signage and/or barricades are installed to identified camping and NO camping Zones.

Well. That's a step in the wrong direction.
Got to wonder the cause of the change ?
Political pressure or abuse/neglect by uncaring travelers ?
Once these changes are made they are usually hard to reverse.
Shame.
Thanks for the timely update.

Bugga, I was calling into StL early May for a night. I have no problem with the charge as I always put $5.00 in the donation box next to the laundry. I as others have to have also paid for a good shower. It's just the ease of how to pay now

I believe this action is due to the owner of the CP in Clairview not getting many customers.
If you look up the CP and the charges, I am not surprised.
There was an newspaper story last year when I was in the north , The local were unhappy with the little amount of money going into there community from the large number staying at St Lawrence , Has for the Caravan park at Clairview always have plenty staying there .

Can vouch for that, we were there 2 years ago & decided to do a couple of nights in the CP, but they were full & directed us to the free camp area.... go figure!.

The poor caravan Park get a lot of blame for stoping free camping but most time it's the camper own work or lack of .

Those possums at Clearview will be the ones to suffer most. They wont be getting their nightly snack of apples!

The lack of donations from the freeloaders at St Lawrence was the main cause of the fee being introduced.
There was a news article I read last year that said the St Lawrence community had large water bills from the camping area and as the donations received weren't covering the cost there 2 options ie. camping fees or close the camping area.

Clairview free camping is now a thing of the past but don't let that deter you from stopping for a rest as the little craft shop is still open there and worth the visit with refreshments, odd bits and pieces, produce, baking, craft, jams, pickles and chutneys. The women there are really friendly and are full of information on the surrounding area.
They are open through the tourist season. April to November. Monday to Friday. 9am to 1pm. St Lawrence is now $10.00 a night to stay. As is Carmilla Beach but I do not know if these fees have started yet and if you are self contained you can stay at Flaggy Rock Community Centre for $7.oo per night with lovely green grass and swimming pool.
dogs allowed.
