Not bought any on line. Or tested them.
As usual you only get what you paid for.
I'm interested to hear of anyone else who has tried the online cheapies as to quality. We will be needing new ones this year as ours are getting a bit iffy. These cost $50 about Five years ago on special in BCF. They have given great service.
They are a boon when coming down steep tracks. or Rock Hopping.

You do get what you paid for. Hiking and camping shops often put quite good quality ones on special. The ones with the shock absorbers are recommended. Don't throw away the "baskets" on the end; they are needed and useful in muddy conditions. I bushwalk and only ever use one stick. Just suggesting that a single pair might be all that is needed.

What would be a good recommended brand name to look for with the shock absorbers?

I have a pair, have had them for over 10 years now, and would not hike without at least one. Serious hiking, take two, but for just a wander, one is ample for support. Great for assistance on rocks, steps, and downhill slopes. Using two on serious hikes, aids your respitory cirulation, hands don't swell from hanging down. Don't know what brand mine are, they were a gift, but suspect purchased from BCF or similar. Have removable boots, for use on rocks, spikes for other, yes keep the circular "basket" - good in mud, also for joining together for storage. They appear to have a bit of bounce - but ot sure if this is shock absorbers.

About 10 years ago we bought a pair of Leki - very expensive but of high quality.
Unfortunately we often forget to pack them or it is inconvenient to do so (on aircraft etc.) so we have had a couple of other brands. Our latest is Welcor, quite cheap but seem quite good and have all the desired features.
With my gammy knees I find then essential.

We have Leki and they are as good as the day we bought them which is over 10 years ago. I often put one in my luggage when travelling and use it , last time I forgot it in China so bought one for $5 , lasted the trip but no good after a few months. Old story you get what you pay for
