Hi everyone. This is my very first post and I greet you all. I am looking to spend some time free camping in the Kimberley regions but I only have a VT Commodore with a 16ft 1987 caravan (which are not designed for off road). I would dearly love to spend a couple of months camping there, so can anyone tell me if this will be possible or is this dream for 4x4 only. Thank you.

If you keep to the great northern highway, you should have noproblems as its all tar. The Gibb R road is a 4wd track, so just keep to the blacktop and take an extra tyre and fuel.Bill

I know a bloke that went down the GRR about 20 years ago in a Toyota Celica. He made and fitted a sump guard before he left Darwin.
You can go most anywhere in your Commodore if you know how to drive.

Wait until the dry season before you go. A lot of dirt roads can be travelled on with care when dry - but wet and mud will stop even 4WDs at times.

There are a few free camp areas beside/near the main (sealed) highway.
Keep River Nat Park is on the NT/WA border. The first campground is about 18kms from highway - unsealed, but usually pretty good. Should be ok for you and the campground is cheap. No power. Is toilet, fireplaces with plates. Very scenic.
The Gibb River Road is sealed to El Questro turnoff. Would give you access to Emma Gorge (day trip). El Q track in can be a bit rough and has a water crossing that may be too deep for you. Ditto the Gibb - I would think the Pentecost crossing would be too deep for you, apart from road condition issues.
If you are able to stay in caravan parks, can easily spend a week or so in Kununurra. Do the boat trip up Ord/sunset cruise on Lake Argyle of you can. Worth the money.
Caravan park in Wyndham adequate. May be ok at Parrys Lagoon Farm.
Recommend the caravan park by entrance to Bungles. They run trips into the Bungles if you can afford same.
Fitzroy Crossing CP - base to do Geicke Gorge boat trip.
Your rig should make it into Windjana Gorge camp area - from the WESTERN side i.e. Derby end. From there, depending on state of GRR - ask other travellers at the time - you might make it to Mt Barnett RH and Manning Gorge camp area, travelling carefully.
