Most manuals or user guides are in PDF or DOC format. You can filter Google's search results with appropriate search modifiers, or you can use Google's Advanced Search. In this way you can potentially reduce thousands of irrelevant hits to a few relevant ones.
For example, the following URL searches for PDF/DOC manuals/guides/instructions for "thingamajig":
Dorian, I don't understand - why type all that 'stuff' when all you need is for Google is "thingamajig manual" or "space shuttle manual" ---- gets the same result.

With Dorian's method you don't get all the other results that aren't any use to you. Try it yourself
See that Dorian's link only gives results of PDF files. There are other handy hints you can use too, like looking for pages that show "parent directory" and a few other things

Thanks Troopy - replaced "thingamajig" with "Ford Territory" and got heaps of PDF files on items that fit Territories.....that is pretty neat. Now to trawl through them. Thanks.

For example, the following URL searches for PDF/DOC manuals/guides/instructions for "thingamajig":
http://www.google.com.au/search?q=%22thingamajig%22+filetype%3Apdf+OR+filetype%3Adoc+%22manual%22+OR+%22guide%22+OR+%22instructions%22
You can refine your search to a particular site, as in the following example:
http://www.google.com.au/search?q=%22space+shuttle%22+filetype%3Apdf+OR+filetype%3Adoc+%22manual%22+OR+%22guide%22+OR+%22instructions%22+site%3Anasa.gov
I will have a play with that and see how I go.
