Has any one done the road between Smithton and Arthur River? If so can you tell me if it is suitable to tow a large caravan or is it only 4WD and a camper trailer.

No problem. The road is sealed all the way. There is a good cheap camping site nearby, called the Manuka Camping Ground. Camps 8 site 181.

Its a good road several camp sites
Tis a conservation area ya gotta pay at
The Rangers office but you cant miss it
As you drive in Late last year twas $13 a night

The Arthur River is a great little place to stay a day or two
I can recommend the day-trip on the George Robertson old boat up the river & the bbq lunch too ~ a fab day's outing
If you decide to continue south from Arthur River south to Strahan I can recommend that as well
The Western Explorer road is a beaut dirt road - did it again last December
The road surface was good, no major hills etc to worry about ~ just make sure you start out with a full tank so that you can reach Strahan okay
The vehicle ferry at the Pieman River will take cars & vans up to 10m I think ... certainly our 7.5m motorhome left plenty of space for a small car (if there had been one)

A large van will not fit on the Fatman barge. That link gives the maximum dimensions. The magic figure for most of us is a 9 metre wheelbase between the first and last axle. My 18' (medium size) van will not go on it.

The road to arther river is large van suitable and is tar/blacktop from Arther river onward to do the alterate route back to smithton is also large van suitable and also blacktop. Good caravan park at the river with plenty of cheap spots suitable for large vans both north and south of the river,in my back yard
