Got a quote today to take ute and 17 and 1/2 foot van to Kangaroo Island... $650 return if you book accomodation as well. $705 otherwise.
Pretty steep for 45 minute/18 kms journey. But for what I have read and heard.....KI is worth it.

Owww !! you would have to go for minimum to weeks to justify that outlay ! But why would you need to book Accomodation, if your taking your Van !

Guess I'm in otherwise category. Maybe caravan site can be regarded as "accomodation"

Did you ask if there were any specials available. we asked at Victor Harbour when booking.
Return fares for us, car & 20ft van were only $400. That was in 2011, about May.

Gday...
The Sealink site for Kangaroo Island ferry shows $548 return ...
From what I can tell from web site is, that for any vehicle over 5 mtrs in length(the van is 7.5) you have to get a price at time of booking.
Thats what the very nice girl quoted me?
Hope its cheaper!!

I think that the ferry is owned by an overseas company so they screw us for all they can get, this is vital bit of infrastructure for Kangaroo Island, yet we allow overseas interests to own it.

SeaLink Travel Group (SeaLink) is a wholly South Australian-owned company http://www.sealink.com.au/about-sealink/our-company/
Its a profitable company, but hardly making huge profits http://www.smh.com.au/business/sealink-travel-profit-boosted-by-lower-fuel-costs-a-20150206-137lk1.html
We are looking at going to Kangaroo island next year, we figure if we intended to stay a week or less it wouldn't be cost effective taking the van (though I still prefer the van to staying in a hotel) but we will probably go for a couple of weeks.

We have been to KI twice, since my accident 7 years ago, as Eril's sister has a house there. Because she is a resident she gets a ferry discount.
We thought it was great and interesting. A day trip could not possibly do it justice.

The same mob of robbers own the Magnetic island barges, and the ones to Stradbroke island.Time Magazine lists them as the most expensive car barges in the world! Even with resident discount, it costme $341 to take my 4wd, slideon, and tiinie to the mainland , and return. When asked why its so expensive, reply Don,t care, go somewhere else.Great way to do business and make fiends. Bill

we went to kangaroo island in October it was 835 dollars for car and caravan plus three nights at the caravan park we have dual cab ranger and coromal Princeton which comes in at 15 and half metres in total which was a bit rich the biggest rip off was the park fees you have to pay for each person and cant get a pass for all parks. But we have been and seen it now and its crossed or the bucket list

We went over in 2012 and had an open ended ticket for return.
We stayed for 4 weeks and loved the place.
When we got back to Penneshaw we went to the Sealink office and booked our return trip with no hassles
