Due to the high temperatures we are currently experiencing in SA I want to get a suitable 12 volt fan to use when free camping. I would be grateful for advice on models that really are efficient. I have looked at the oscillating type which can be fixed to either the wall or ceiling however they need to be wired into a 12 volt circuit. This presents some difficulty as I would need to connect it to a light circuit and all the light switch are at the front of the van and I wish to place the fan at the rear. This would mean I would have to switch the lights on to have the fan working, or alternativley replace a light (all LED downlight units) with a unit that has a separate switch and connect the fan to this. I would prefer a unit that could be plugged into the 12 volt cigarette type fitting if I can find one that is really efficient. I would be grateful for any advice/ help on this.
Thanks, David.

Hi David,
We recently installed a caframo marine fan from whitworths marine. They are currently(till end March) on special for $60 off so $139 + post. these fans are quiet, have 3 speeds, very adjustable, selectable off timer and only draw 0.4 amp on high. They can be connected using the supplied wire or connected to a ciggy outlet if you have a lead.
Have 1 Siroco fan above the bed & about to fit another, I would recommend them.

We installed one of these fans for last summer.
Very effective and I just used a ( junction joiners / T connection from Jaycar or whatever) from the light wiring above the bed. So I have a swithc for the fan and a switch for the overhead light. If I can install the fan any one can.
Works a treat for us.
Another vote for the Sirocco fans - got two about a year ago while living in my old caravan and ran them off a 240v/12v adapter. Very quiet, can be aimed 360 degrees in virtually any direction and has four pre-set timer settings. I'm just now working out where to mount them in the Hino. Bit pricey but well worth it.

Thanks for this thread. We had a cheap fan from Jaycar it was so noisy, too noisy really. Looks like the sirocco is the way to go. They have a shop in Elizabeth Street , Melbourne . we'll go for a train trip (we like train rides) and listen to them and hopefully pick one or two up. Thanks for the info.
Cheers Dianne

We have a Sirocco fan they are great, but they do not oscillate, but they use very little power.

Plus one for the Caframo, bit expensive but excellent little fan that draws very little current.
$135 posted
Pretty good price.
Have a look at USB fans may be an alternative
