Hi good folk. We're thinking of having a look at Lake Eyre now that it has some water in it. We've been advised that the unsealed roads and tracks such as the Oodnadata Track are in poor condition which is somewhat confirmed by the DPTI (http://www.dpti.sa.gov.au/OutbackRoads) particularly for dragging a 3 tonne caravan. We thought of going as far as the bitumen and catching a scenic flight across the lake but the only reasonable ones we've been able to find are from Maree or William Creek both of which require some unsealed driving. Is anyone aware of "joy" flights over the lake from Coober Pedy, Lyndhurst or Andamooka?

I did a scenic flight from Williams creek about five-six years ago when the lake was full and it was amazing. I went with wright air, cost was good and service was fantastic.
Have done flights over the lake both dry and full of water, both trips are spectacular and worth the Time, Cost & Effort. IMO.
The road from Coober Pedy to William Ck. was almost as good as bitumen 12 months ago. You could always stay the night in a cabin at William Creek & catch an early morning flight.
Have flown out of Maree & William Ck prefer the latter. Not sure of Coober Pedy.

When it is full of water its a magnificent sight,the bird life is spectular.

There are flights out of Broken Hill with Silver City Scenic Flights. No dirt roads involved to get there. www.scsf.com.au/
We were lucky and saw Lake Eyre from a QANTAS flight we were taking from Adelaide to Darwin. Pilot went a bit closer - and as everyone went to the right of the plane to see..... did it tip that side?? Haha. But brilliant to see and lots of nice photos as our friends had a seat on that side of the plane.

Hi we did a flight out of Maree last time when Lake Eyre had lots of water in it. Worth every single cent in our opinion. We didnt see any birdlife at all but the colours of the water are amazing.
The road from Lyndhurst to Maree has stretches of alternating dirt and black top. The dirt sections are solid hard stuff that you could certainly take any vehicle on. Farina is worth stopping for a look too.

G'day Dave we took the flight from Coober Pedy about two years ago and it was much cheaper than the other alternatives and you also fly over the painted desert.
There are no dirt or mud roads and there is heaps to see around Coober Pedy hope you have a great trip

Thanks for all the info and comments, really appreciated. At this stage we'll probably opt for the Coober Pedy tour. We were there last year but I guess we'll find stuff to do that will stop us getting bored.
