When turning fridge on gas the tiny red needle does not move more than 2mm from the left to right, towards the green, to let me know it is working. It does not reach into the green area. What have others found?

I am not certain of this but I would think that the thermocouple may have been dislodged and is not completely in the flame. The low reading could mean the thermocouple is not getting hot enough to move the needle to the green.
others with much more experience may correct this if I am on the wrong track but that is what I would be looking at first.

Thanks Frank. That is what I thought BUT before removing the first screw I needed to check. Now I need someone to tell me how to go about sorting the thermocouple??
I had difficulty lighting it last night as the gas bottle was getting very close to empty, so switched to almost full bottle and it lit easily.

I'll go along with Frank
You need to check the thermocouple position but ALSO the flame size
The thermocouple with a cable attached, is a small metal tube with a blunt [rounded] end that must have the tip in the flame at all times
Make sure you do not move the ignitor which has a sharpened point & also has a cable
But I would first check the flame size
The outer cone should just reach the lip of the boiler tube
It is possible you have a blockage in the gas system[loss of gas pressure at the burner]

Ok fellas, I found the fridge vent and removed it to find everything I needed to check. A bit of a fiddle with the thermocouple then lit it and the tiny red needle went almost to the green. Here is a video of the flame. I must say the fridge works well on gas.
Aussie Paul - the video is a great way of demonstrating what you are talking about and shows the thermocouple position beautifully. If I were giving points I'd give you 9.5/10.

To me the flame size looks to be ok
I cannot tell if the thermocouple is in the right place though.

It may be decieving ,but the Ignitor tip [the right angled rod ] seems to be a long way above the burner
Does it light easily ? or with a woof?

My red line never has gone into the green - sits on the border, but the fridge works just fine on gas.

Yes mine is just about on the line White/Green. Now and then it just goes over into the green.
You can test it by isolating the gas bottle (switch it off)Expose the gas burner as per the pictures.
Switch the fridge to "Gas"
Have someone watch the gas flame indicator on the fridge.
Using a "Gas Match" Gas lighter
Direct the flame onto the bulb end of Thermocouple above the burner.
You (the person watching the indicator) should see how far the indicator will move with direct flame on it.
It might not be worth fiddling and adjusting it, if the red indicator is at it's limit anyway.
That flame is really good.

Ralph, it does not light easily but have not hear a "woof" (technical work). I meant to ask earlier, does the igniter spark jump to the burner or the thermocouple? I have been going to get Eril to push the button so I could see, have not got there yet!!!

Ok, did the "get Eril to press the igniter button and me watch" trick and the spark jumped to the thermocouple. I bent the igniter down and now the spark jumps to the burner. Almost dark so will make sure it can't move again in the morning.
