G'day Phil(pws25) we were there four months, and February was the nicest weather Wise! Enjoy! See you in October?

we're one of those deprived and sad couples who haven't YET been to Tas - but we intend to change that this year.
Can someone help us out with The Spirit:
1. Is it easy to get your ute and van (22 ft) onto and off the ship - is it driveon and drive off or a bit tricky?
2. Better to go in day or night and is there a cost difference?
3. How long does the trip take?
4. Is it necessary to get a cabin for comfort sakes, or a day chair ok?
5. Anything else you can think of lol

Bruce and Bev - #1 drive-on/off. Tight fit once you are inside, but easily doable. Troy drove our bus (8.5m) on easily; first time, he'd driven it for the first time from Adelaide to Melbourne after getting his licence 18 months earlier, and not using it til we picked up the bus, second time, he'd driven it to the mechanic, then the boat, after a similar non-drive period.
#2 - who can say, I think it's personal preference - look at booking AT LEAST 6 months in advance. Start looking early, look every day, have a large window to travel in. Avoid holiday periods.
#3 - they allow 12 hours, but it takes at least 1-2 of lining up to get on, and depending on where you are in the line, get off.
#4 - get a cabin if you can. Price may be higher, but the comfort is worth it. That being said, we paid more MEL-DPO on seats than the other way, with a cabin to ourselves.
#5 - take food, and personal entertainment. What you can get on board is exxy and limited.
#6 - have fun. Tassie is beautiful, but the weather is super-changeable, and can be expensive. Treat it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and spend/live/sightsee accordingly while there.
