Hi all, hope everyone had a good Xmas and are enjoying the new year so far. We are in the process of planning a trip to Broome from early June to late July up through the centre. We are hoping to do as much free camping as possible, but after reading different articles on various sites it seems free camping may be limited in Darwin and Broome. Any advice would be appreciated. We will have our English Staffy with us and would like to spend some time at Uluru. Is there anywhere we can leave the dog safely while viewing Uluru please? Cheers Dale.

Basically free camping is out in Darwin and Broome, there are some lower cost camping options around but as it will be pretty much peak tourist time they may not be available, in Darwin at least they will be pretty much booked I should imagine....certainly 3 years ago when i left ,after living in Darwin for several years, it was the case.
In Broome it is pretty much the same, or was.
However, travelling up there you will have plenty of free and low cost camps so should not have spent too many $$ so perhaps that will make the cost in town more bearable.
Many years since I went to Uluru, you will most likely have to make some enquiries re your Staffy, used to be able to have one's dog in the campground at the resort, and go and do the Rock viewing and a good walk around base of rock and get back before dog was too hot or uncomfortable, not sure how that works now though.
There will probably be others who can give you some more up to date info.

You will be in Broome and Darwin at their busiest times. Not only is free camping limited, but so are caravan parks that take dogs, in those towns. To get into a caravan park at that time, in Darwin and Broome, you may need to book well ahead.
At Yulara, your best best is to talk to other dog owners in the caravan park there - where I am assuming you will be staying - and arrange a "You mind mine, then I will mind yours" swap.

G'day Dale, we were up in Broome and Darwin at the same time last year and there are no free camps. In Broome we had to accept paying full caravan park costs as the free camps were up the Cape Leveque road a fair way north and the road was only suitable for well set up off road vehicles/vans/campers. If you want a cheaper place near to Darwin there is the Coomallie Creek Caravan Park just south of the Batchelor turn off on the Stuart H'way about 80 ks from Darwin. They were just getting the place started again last year and the fees were $15 for powered and $10 unpowered. Basic but clean facilities. Might have gone up since but it was one of the best places we stayed during our 17 weeks away. Cheers Dave
