"HELP" G'day all, my old 89 Patrol has suddenly decided it can do 190kph sitting stationary in the driveway,
"Yep" the flaming speedo has gone "Kaput"
I have been told that it is a common problem with the Patrols, but no one seems to be able to say what to look for, or how to slow the old girl's speedo down or rather make it work as it should.
Is there anyone out there who has had the same trouble and have, either fixed the problem or had it fixed.
Any info would be great to hear, so come on you cleaver People, I'm all ears. Thanks K.J.
Its probably a bearing problem in the cluster ,not quite sure where you are but Ringwood Speedo,s rebuilt my coaster speedo .they replaced the damper springs bearings and recalibrated the speedo for $154 and you know its a top job. There maybe a speedo reconditioner in your area.
Thanks for the search Hako That's the same web site that I've been looking at as well,
there are heaps of answers there but. don't exactly say this is the problem,
I see that some people have gone to the trouble of re-soldering the entire dash panel and have fixed the problem,
As EXa41 has suggested, I should take the speedo to a technician this I have already done once before but, talk about charging like a wounded Bull !!!
Thanks Guys K.J.

I'm 'lucky' in that on my 'modern' 1995 4.2 EFI Patrol, the speedo is still OK, only reading around 5km/hr faster than actual speed, but the Tackometer carked it around 150,000km ago.
I pulled it out & had a look but nothing obvious. Gave it a wack & put it back. A local instrument repair place suggested (from memory) around $150 to repair. Sometimes I think about fixing it but just go by the sound of the engine these days, rather than driving by the Tacko as I used to.

Hi Jim
Maybe it is a stupid idea, could you use the GPS as a speedo
Dont know if it is allowed

G'day John,
Yes I suppose I could do that,
the only problem there is that, if I happened to be in an accident and the "Boys in Blue were to look at the speedo,
they might get the wrong idea if they saw it reading 180+ kph
I'm just wondering how accurate is the GPS, I've noticed before while driving, it always showed around 4 kph under the speedo reading
Which one would you believe ?

That's interesting ... My Patrol reads about the same ... ie GPS is appx 4kph under the speedo. which was the same result a couple of times where they have those speed check displays on overhead bridges on some highways.
This is a good thing as it helps keep me under the speed limit.

concur that the GPS should be the most accurate.

GPS absolutely no question in my opinion, most speedo's are build to read faster than you are going very few are accurate, it's probably a safety thing but if you drive a 100km speed limited truck these drivers that think there doing 100 when actually only doing 95 are the most frustrating feckers on the road ( sorry I'll take a deep breath and count to 10) ok so that's my rant over
my VW jetta was reading 8 km faster than GPS ( na VWWould not change it were told it's within specks I said I hope the engine is built to better specks than that or I'll be bloody un happy now done 250,000 and love that car less than 5L per 100 km and goes like e clappers ) till put the next size tyres on now only 2/3 km fast have been past many a cop car and radar and flash for cash camera and never pulled up or got nasty letter on the mail .
So there you have it my 50 cents worth

Gday...
Some reading matter regarding regulations pertaining to speedo accuracy -
An accuracy of +/- 10 percent of the vehicle's true speed is needed when a vehicle is travelling above 40km/h. This means if a vehicle is travelling at a true speed of 100km/h, the speedo is allowed to indicate a reading between 90km/h and 110km/h.
I heard that you could be booked in Victoria for travelling at 1kph over the limit. Am I wrong?

Well if that is the case, that's another good reason to give that State a big miss,
But they will tell you, it's all in the name of road safety, and nothing to do with Revenue Raising. "Yer Right"

Maybe not much help to the OP but in Tamworth(NSW) there is a company called New England Instrument Service (NEIS)
they do all sorts of instrument repairs and calibration at reasonable rates
maybe look for someone like that in the area you are in.

Speedo accuracy will change as the tyres wear down as well.

Thanks KFT, there is a Instrument Servicing Mob within a couple of clicks of our place,
I've had the speedo with them once before when the trip meter packed up, I will have to hang off until another Pension comes in though,
It's not cheap getting things like that looked at now days.

I'd give up as the problem is inherent with the design - just fit one of these GPS digital speedometer and no worries:

I've had a look at that G.P.S. hako, "Yep" that looks like the way to go,
Only one problem I can see there is that it won't keep a check on the distance the vehicle has travelled,
I require this as I make it a rule to change the oil every 5,000 km.
Still, it would probably be a lot cheaper than having my "u-bute-always-faulty" Speedo. fixed up again
thanks for the nod on this type of speedo hako, think I'll go for it.

K.J.
You did not say if the odometer is bug***ed as well Might have to keep a rough mileage log or change oil every 3 months.
Good luck.
