In the lastest Caravan and Motorhome magazine (which should have been available on-line at least a year ago for use travellers to access as they are published!!), on pg 16 in the Letters to the Editor, is a pic of a professionally made "breather that runs between the toilet cassette and the outside door flap. According the letter writer, they no longer have to use any chemicals in their cassette and have no smells at all. The use dump points - I guess because theres no solids breakdown by chemicals, the emptying process is a bit "lumpy".
Has anyone had experience with this system and can enlighten us as to whether or not theyre the best thing since sliced bread as the letter writer claims?
I can upload a pic of it which is in the mag - just means Ive got to unpack my printer to scan the page, but if someone really wants to see it - PM me

We have one in the MH that we are using in Europe.
Works very well indeed, but we still use sodium percarbonate as well, to make emptying more pleasant, but it is probably not required.
I intend to fit one to the OKA in due course, but I will probably build my own instead of buying the expensive original.
Cheers,
Peter

Well whatta you know......looked on google and there it is !!
Looks expensive and not for the rank amateur to fit - no obvious on-site price either
www.caravanpro.com.au/products/toilets-%2B-sanitation/cassette-toilet-spare-parts/sog-toilet-ventilator-ts-thetford-c-250260
With a price of $187 (plus fitting, no doubt?)
Cheers,

I have had one for about 6yrs and they are great. We only use nappy soak. Just installed one for a friend , took about 1 hour and its a handy man type of job
I fitted this set up 11 years ago when the SOG units from Aussie Traveller were selling for $360. The computer fan $12 + fitting for C200 tank/hose/plastic vent $13 + Led-on Toggle Switch $8 + Charcoal filter $8 + Elect Junction Box/hose fitting for behind the fan in door $7 for a Total of approx $50 back then. I have since acquired the Proper Replacement fitting for the Hose at the original Auto Venting system of the C200 Unit and this has improved the security of the connection and non-spillage of effluent ($23 from Aussie Traveller). I hope the Prices listed on CaravanPro are for all Models ? but may not be. This system does negate the need for chemicals but for the Price and benefits of the cleansing action of the Napsisan with 34% Sodium Percarbonate I will still add at 1-2 Capful to every tankful.
After a years use I then add 2 litres of the cheapest white vinegar then filled with water and left sit for a couple of hours to remove any crystalline buildup, makes it like new inside the tank. Cheers Kev.

I also read about it the mag with interest, I some research with google and one comment was that it was great when free camping in the middle of nowhere, but wasn't that good for your neighbour in a caravan park. If those who have a SOG have you had any complaints from those parked next to you ?

They have a carbon filter on the outlet, so no smell should be discernible to anyone outside (or inside).
That filter would require replacing from time to time. Perhaps the one in question was well overdue?

We camped near someone last year with one and the smell emanating from the door vent was diabolical ! maybe he did not have a carbon filter, I don't know, but it was enough for us to move away rapidly !
Sewage works has nothing on that revolting stink.
I know they are applauded by some but for us we will stick with our tried and proven sodium per-carbonate only.

The SOG is a great system and has a extraction fan that runs when the house power is on,and can be put on a switch to direct power if you want to run it more, they do a great job at extracting the smells from cassette.

This guys has made his own and it's worth having a look at his version of the Fridge Fan.
http://www.dreampod.net/boroma/toilet_vent.html
The problem with that system is that the smell stays in the cassette compartment until the fan is activated as the lid is always open
